Audition Preparation:
Please prepare two contrasting contemporary monologues, one minute each.
About the show:
Salida is a full length play that follows Julio, a young Cuban American college student, as he struggles to share his truth with his family and break free from the expectations placed upon him by his family. Years later, the play revisits the family as Julio returns, after moving away from his family, with his husband and son, confronting unresolved wounds while rediscovering the Cuban roots.
Character information:
Martin / Julio
Male. Mid Forties. Hispanic.
Martin is a kind father who only wants the best for his son. Hispanic / An older Julio who has shied away from his family for over 13 years and has lost his roots.
Oswaldo / Martin
Male. Late Sixties. Hispanic.
Oswaldo is the kind and cool Abuelo who can talk jokes and business alike./ An Older Martin. A man who has become more learned with age. Wants to spoil the grandson he’s never seen.
Julio / Lucas
Male. Late teens to twenties Hispanic.
Julio has a dignified expression for being so young. Knows his way around an argument. Is a closeted Bisexual who wants to come out. / Lucas is the surrogate child of Julio and Nathan. Wants to find out where he came from and who his family is.
Manny / Nathan
Male. Mid Forties. Hispanic.
Manny is conservative by nature. Has a bit of a temper. Actor must be okay playing a homophobic character. / Nathan is a Chicago native, white dude who is not very knowledgeable on Julio’s traditions and culture, but really wants to learn.
