That the University of Iowa restored, traveled, and created a new museum to house this masterpiece (valued at a startlingly low $140 million) at a time when the public trust is in increasing jeopardy is IMO truly wonderful. The story is that much more resonant on the heels of reading about Po***ck and his tumultuous life with Krasner in Mary Gabriel's, NINTH ST. WOMEN. (This is a terrific read if interested in this time period.)

To date, ‘Mural’ has visited 13 museums and traveled about 20,000 miles.

I revisited the Smith College Museum last week after @ 30 years--it was a fabulous afternoon. Among the several noteworthy American pictures in the collection are these two--standouts for me. Little known genre painter Alfred Kappes painted sensitive pictures of African Americans. Exhibited at the Boston Arts Club in 1887, TATTERED AND TORN, is a sympathetic painting, poignant, and beautifully executed. It surfaced on the auction market at Phillips in 2001, and was donated to Smith by well known American art collector, Rita Fraad. Thomas Eakins EDITH MAHON is a portrait I recall writing about in American art history (decades ago!) I was captivated then, and still am now by Eakins psychological depiction of this well known pianist of the time. What an intelligent, introspective, and to me, very modern woman. Love the Stanford White frame, too.

A story that illustrates the better side of the present art world. Worth reading!

Upon seeing the fruits of Wilson’s struggle, one of Hauser’s directors helped organize a pop-up exhibition for the young painter in the back room of a DUMBO fashion boutique.
