monomoka"

monomoka" Who are we? Limited access to a "colourful" western world, and the desire to develop our own style, forced us into creative thinking.

We are twin sisters: Katarzyna and Monika Gwiazdwska, who practically from the time of our birth were of one mind in the development of our creativity and in our perception of the world. We grew up in Poland during the bleak era of a decadent socialism, which made us determined to find different aesthetic values from the ones that surrounded us. As teenagers we acquired the skills to hand sew, cro

chet and knit. This helped us to create our own unique identity. Gradually our interest in fashion brought us closer to the different forms of art related to graphics, painting and design. Ultimately, we found our natural direction in architectural studies, and both of us completed our Masters Degrees in Architecture in 1999 at the Wroclaw Polytechnic. Our architectural studies taught us about the relationship between form and function, and this was what interested us the most and defined us. Searching for our own style eventually led us through projects in graphic arts, furniture design, set and interior design, which is what we do to this day. It is essential that our projects are individual and unique in character, merging a beautiful form with clean function. Our experiences over the years have brought us to...

project monomoka”

Monomoka”, so far resulted in a group of 16 unique in character, hand crafted pieces. (13 of them are presented at monomoka.com, 3 totally new objects debuted at “Maison & Objet 2013” in Paris). To create monomoka” collection we are using old traditional, disappearing techniques like crocheting and knitting. The painstaking hand crocheting which we personally carry out means that each unique piece has taken many months to create. Likewise each piece of furniture is created from tens to a few hundred or more handmade elements, which in the end have been joined together to form a single harmonised creation. Every object is an individual creation for an exceptional client, someone who we hope will value such an original work of art. Because “special order“ collection is appeal to individual client, we decided to aim wider market. Now, we are creating new, line-collection, which will combine wooden handmade techniques, with approach of crocheting monomoka” touch. First object of monomoka” collection was made about 8 years ago. To show whole spectrum of our ideas, we decided to wait until entire collection will be completed. To the end of 2012 none furniture of monomoka” was presented to the world. In November of 2012 we took part in competition of “Society of British Interior Design” with success (Sleeping Mice got on final list in Product category). In march of 2013 object “The Hive” won Grand Award and object “Artichoke” won Merit Award in “SingaPlural” design contest in Singapore. So far we presented our work at:
“SingaPlural” design contest in Singapore, (March 2013)
“WrocLove Design Festival” in Wroclaw Poland (May 2013)
“DMY Berlin” in Germany (June 2013)
“Maison & Objet” in Paris – France (September 2013)

“Beijing Design Week” in Beijing – China (September 2013)

About the exhibition
MONOMOKA - STRUCTURES OF CLOSENESS
The exhibition by twin sisters Monika and Katarzyna Gwiazdowska is a reflection on relationship — one that is closest, most primal, and often difficult to translate into an external language.
The starting point is the experience of sisterhood, understood both as a biological bond and as a deep, intuitive form of communication — almost like a private code.
The crochet textiles created by the artists become a materialization of this relationship. Each loop, weave, and thread builds a structure that is not merely visual, but a record of experiences, emotions, and memory.
Here, the textile is not just an artistic medium, but a living tissue of meanings — a space where individual stories intertwine with the universal experience of closeness.
The presented works construct a narrative about the relationship between textile and the natural world, as well as a return to archetypal connections between body and matter. The fiber — organic and transformable — carries traces of growth, decay, and transience.
The sisters’ early works originated from functional forms rooted in design and architecture, gradually evolving into artistic expression, where textile becomes an autonomous medium open to intuition, process, and experimentation. A natural consequence of this path was the shift from utilitarian scale to abstract, large-format works with a sculptural character.
The practice of Monika and Katarzyna Gwiazdowska is embedded in the long tradition of women’s craftsmanship as a form of togetherness — spending time collectively, sharing stories, and building bonds through repetitive gestures such as crocheting or embroidery. Their work can therefore be seen as a contemporary continuation of these practices.
