Interview:In the studio with Alison Causer🖤
MP: You recently graduated from the Studio School MFA program, has this experience changed your practice?
AC: Absolutely, I decided to study at NYSS to push my understanding of figurative painting and image-making. I was also looking for a unique art community to grow and learn within. Once I read Mercedes Matter's art education manifesto, I was hooked. The experience transformed me fully.

MP: We are fascinated by the research you do to plan for paintings. Can you tell us a particular discovery that inspires you?
AC: The lived experience of others feels important for me to understand, and I think understanding other people's experiences and history helps us place ourselves in the world. We don't live in isolation; we are in relation to others. I am curious about the stories of women and migrations of people, politics, and religion as these things shape our world.

MP: Can you tell us about your most recent body of work with giant women?
AC: The giantesses are painted in mostly barren landscapes, exploring the relationship between the monumentality of female might and the intimacy of interior life. They are about the awkwardness of being a woman, and they are about women returning to nature, play, strength, vulnerability, solitude, and sitting with oneself.

MP: We love your interest in Goya, was there a particular painting that sparked your attraction to his work?
AC: A small aquatint titled, "Seated Giant" was the first image I fell in love with. It still captivates me.

MP: As a New Yorker, do you have a favorite activity in the city or spot that inspires you?
AC: The Met is my library, the Hudson River is my resting place, and the studio is my sanctuary.

MP: One last brain picking, what is your favorite color?
AC: At the moment, Im interested in orange-reds and purple-red-black metallics. Oh, and acid yellow-greens.
