Hanuman is one of several zoomorphic characters in Indian mythology but is the only wholly animal figure who is revered as a god today. The mythic texts describe him as a monkey child of the Wind God, possessing enormous strength, keen intellect and mastery over the Vedas and other branches of learning. He is also an unquestioning devotee of Lord Rama.

This has been painted on both sides of the leather and the limbs are attached by a thick handmade thread which can be moved easily for a puppet show. Also, the leather is translucent and looks breathtaking when light passes through the piece.

Ravana is usually depicted with ten heads and two ears in total. The epics describe him as a great scholar, a capable ruler and a maestro of the Veena, but someone who wished to overpower the gods. Ten heads of Ravana represent that he had knowledge of the Six Shastra and Four Vedas. He abducted Sita Ma and was killed by Lord Rama.

This leather puppet artwork originated in Andhra Pradesh, India. Here, Ravana is painted on both sides of the leather.
