Brian Friedland - piano

"Friedland contributes lyrical solos that would not be out of place on a Keith Jarrett record.”
– Scott Yanow, critic, All About Jazz
>> Get to know the bandleader!
>> Composer/pianist Brian Friedland’s music displays creativity through a large and varied body of works. His recordings include compositions for chamber orchestra, big band, strings, brass, saxophone quartet, prepared piano, and many small jazz groups. While rooted in jazz piano traditions, his compositions also show his love of genres ranging from Balkan folk to classical minimalism.
>> In addition to leading several jazz ensembles, his projects include an ongoing series of comedic songs inspired by commercial products and a quintet that wildly reimagines classic cinematic themes through a jazz fusion lens. Friedland has released 9 albums of original music, performed at venues across the US and internationally, and frequently performs and collaborates in his home town of Boston.
>> Grammy nominated composer and musical collaborator Kim Richmond describes Friedland’s music as “inspirationally crafted, an excellent and interesting mix of art works. He shows his dedication towards creating and performing new music.”

Wayne Branco - trombone
Steve Piermarini - trombone
John Arcaro - piano
Stephan Arsenault - bass
Mark Branco - drums
ft. Jeff Galindo - trombone
>> Get to Know 2Slick!
>> The classic jazz quintet features a front line of a saxophone and a trumpet, or maybe two saxes. But 2Slick, a quintet performing at Arthur’s House of Jazz on June 6, heralds the prominence of an instrument not commonly seen as a duo; the trombone. Wayne Branco and Steve Piermarini know a bit about playing the trombone. With 100 years of study, practicing, and performing between them, they’ve played in groups backing up artists from Bob Hope to the New Kids on the Block, at venues from the Blue Note in Osaka, Japan, to Carnegie Hall. But they’ll be stepping into the spotlight as co-leaders when their group, 2Slick, appears at the Sahara Club.
>> The two-trombone front line isn’t a new idea. Jazz trombone greats J.J. Johnson and Kai Winding recorded several albums as a trombone duo in the 50’s and 60’s. However, the concept has seen little use since then until Branco and Piermarini decided to revive it several years ago. The two have been musical colleagues and good friends for 35 years. Together, they’ve worked in trombone sections for trumpeter Arturo Sandoval, the Nelson Riddle Orchestra, the Harry James Orchestra, and singers Jerry Vale and Rita Moreno. These two have it down when it comes to matching sound and style. “Even non-musicians have commented to us on how well-matched we are,” Piermarini said recently. “After playing together for so long, you form a unified concept.”
>> Besides doing much of the J.J. and Kai material, the group also performs many jazz standards and originals arranged by the two leaders and other contributors. Piermarini notes, "You’ll hear us do some of the things J.J. and Kai recorded for Columbia, but you’ll also hear us do things that hadn’t been written yet when they were active. We like to show jazz aficionados what a facile, expressive instrument the trombone can be.”

>> Meet the singer!
>> Giovanna De Marco is New York City born, and Boston bred. Her unique, dynamic vocal style and chameleon-like qualities give her the ability to seamlessly cross over multiple genres with ease. Her tone shifts from warm simmer to bright shimmer instantly, effortlessly.
>> Giovanna shares, "The jazz voice has always drawn me in, inspired me. It feels freeing and yet ever challenges me to grow. To journey and create in this mode yields immeasurable possibilities of malleable intonations and improvisational expression, and all in this wonderful forum of collaboration with others."
>> At the age of ten, Giovanna's parents brought her to see Ella Fitzgerald perform at Boston's Symphony Hall. It was a defining moment that helped shape Giovanna's love of jazz. Soon after, Giovanna sang on Dave Maynard's Boston-based TV show, Community Auditions, and so it began.
>> Since then, Giovanna has been performing in a variety of venues, from hip, intimate listening rooms to grand ballrooms and everything in between, all along the eastern seaboard. Giovanna was heavily immersed in the jazz and alternative music scene in the Pioneer Valley during her studies, and before graduating from UMASS Amherst. Her band Delayed Reaction received much local acclaim and radio airplay in 1990s Boston. When Giovanna isn't performing, she is a vocal technique coach in her private practice.

Renowned sax player Miles Donahue has been called "a jazz treasure" and "one of the best-kept jazz secrets" by Boston Globe jazz critic Bob Blumenthal.
In an interview in Saxophone Journal, Jerry Bergonzi said:
“Miles Donahue is one of my favorite cats because he plays so unique and fresh."
>> Learn a little about Miles Donahue!
>> In the 60s Miles Donahue performed at many venues with his own group that featured Harvey Swartz, Jerry Bergonzi, Charlie Banacos, Nick Goumas and Jack Diefendorf. One of these concerts in 1972, performed with Charlie Banacos and Jerry Bergonzi, became known as the famous Arlington Street Church Concert.
>> In the 1980s, Miles did two albums for which he wrote all the original material with New York Philharmonic flutist Paige Brook. These two albums were released on Tioch records.
>> In 1992, Miles first major recording as a jazz leader was released on Timeless Records. “Double Dribble” featured Kenny Werner, Bruce Gertz and George Schuller. A review of this recording in Saxophone Journal reads: “Very few musicians today have the diversity and hidden talents Miles Donahue possesses. His phrasing of tenor and trumpet, the harmonic sophistication he plays with and his ability to swing with incredible beauty, all lead to a master musician. This is one of the best CDs I’ve heard in years.”
>> Miles formed his own label, Amerigo Records, and the first release, “In The Pocket,” features Fred Hersch, Jerry Bergonzi, Jamey Haddad, Kurt Rosenwinkle and Jay Anderson. It was released September 2001.
