Emerge: A Festival of Futures
Started in 2012, Emerge explores the future in evocative ways. This festival offers imaginative and hands-on experiences of the future–exposing the latest inventions from ASU and beyond, and asking how we might shape and adapt them in surprising ways. By bringing together artists, scientists, humanists, designers, and other performers and scholars, Emerge draws on ASU

’s diverse ecology of world-renowned researchers and its culture of interdisciplinary exchange to create vibrant portraits of alternative futures. Each year Emerge curates art, technology, performance, and interactive narrative for the general public, inviting everyone to participate in what’s to come by making it tangible and accessible here and now.

I had this long fungi joke, but I don’t have enough shroom to type it. You know, just bad dad joke humor.

All jokes aside, we’re excited to highlight the work of Lisa Schonberg and Allie ES Wist and their project Sensory Kinship for the Third Kind. They will present an interactive installation and workshop that will have us explore how we can sense mushrooms and speculate how mushrooms sense their own environments. “In our workshop at Emerge, we will invite participants to listen to smell and speculate about mushrooms' chemical communication and listen to the vibratory soundscape of the soil habitats that many mushrooms and mycelium live in. Participants will also ‘listen’ to music created through a ‘translation’ of electrical impulses from live mushrooms."

Check out the immersive artwork of Mary Neubauer and her Advanced Sculpture class. They are building a series of tables to run the length of the Emerge festival. This student lead project is made with cardboard, steel, aluminum, and acrylic materials. Professor Neubauer says the project “riffs off the mid-century table design-- from cloud-like imaginary tables all the way to sound art-- to reflect on the various ways tables are used.” Watch the video to hear the perspective of student, Oliver Charles, and how he connects the discussion around the table to imagination.

This semester the Humanities Lab, Justice through School Gardens, the class has been asking questions about the future of school gardens in Arizona schools. Their class has seven different projects looking to advance the impact that school gardens can have on the youth and community today and build the foundation of change for the future.
Listen to what the Purple group thinks about how their project, Justice Starts at Home and their hope for impact on future generations. Their goal is to “inspire the next generation of environmentalists by emphasizing the importance of working together by bringing gardening from school to home.”
Make sure to tune in throughout this week to learn more about the different projects. In addition, you will be able to ask the students questions this Saturday at the Mesa Arts Center. See you all there 🏡🪴🌞
