My momma, 1997 - City of Chandler art collection. This mixed-media collage by Mesa-based artist Veralyn Johnson tells the story of her family history through photographs of family members and news clippings from the Segregation Era and the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. The artwork commemorates African Americans’ perseverance through continued struggles, with a subject who is surrounded by her loved ones, arms raised in pride and self-awareness.
