Community Band Celebrates ‘Contemporary American Composers’
Music by John Williams, Whitacre, Ticheli and more June 7 in Merritt Island

(MERRITT ISLAND, FL) – The Community Band of Brevard has been entertaining the Space Coast for over 40 years, performing several high-quality, free public concerts each year. Their latest offering, Contemporary American Composers, celebrates energetic and moving harmonies that are uniquely American. Music lovers should mark their calendars now for Sunday, June 7 at Merritt Island High School Auditorium, 100 Mustang Way (off North Courtenay Parkway, 32953). The 3:00 PM concert will include the music of living 20th century composers, John Williams, Eric Whitacre, Frank Ticheli, Brian Balmages and Samuel Hazo. The very melodic “October” by Whitacre has an almost vocal quality, while “Joy in All Things” by Balmages is filled with musical imagery and complex rhythms. Ticheli’s “Vesuvius” (yes, that Vesuvius) feels appropriately explosive and fiery, while “Midway March” by John Williams is an energetic and patriotic concert march that will leave you breathless. “Ride” by Hazo was inspired by a high-speed country road trip in Pennsylvania, while the composer’s “Fantasy on a Japanese Folk Song” has a swelling and hummable melody. The work by Eric Whitacre will be directed by the group’s associate conductor, Jeff Morin. The group is a past winner of the John Philip Sousa Foundation's Sudler Silver Scroll Award for musical excellence. Contemporary American Composers is free with no ticket required and no reserve seating.
