ABOUT: Accused of a crime he didn’t commit, Benjamin Barker, a London Barber, is sent to Australia by the evil Judge Turpin. Now serving a dark and vengeful god, he returns to London 15 years later and now goes by the name Sweeney Todd. Upon learning of the death of his wife, amongst other updates while he was away, Sweeney takes it upon himself to seek revenge. Befriending a lonely crazed woman, he enlists Mrs. Lovett’s help to apply his razor to unlucky customers while Mrs. Lovett prepares their corpses for her meat-pie shop, but he won’t be satisfied until his razor finally falls on Turpin. Swing your razor high, Sweeney!

RECOGNIZE THE POWER OF ART. 🎭

We at Playhouse on the Square are proud to be Memphis’ professional resident theatre company—the place where Memphis truly takes center stage. For nearly six decades, we’ve stood as a cornerstone of the city’s cultural life, producing bold, thought-provoking, and lively theatrical experiences that reflect and elevate our community. Memphis’s arts culture is not a side note—it is the city’s heartbeat. It is vibrant because it is lived, not just observed. The arts bring people together across lines of race, class, and background. Through the arts, we strive to create a culture that sparks necessary conversations. We foster empathy, celebrate identity, challenge assumptions, and build community pride. Here’s to many more curtain calls, standing ovations, and shared moments of pride.

We are proud to join in celebrating the vibrant creative movement that continues to inspire and enrich our community. Join us in recognizing the power of the arts!
