🎤 The Track That Opened the Gate
In 1977, the Jamaican government cracked down on neighborhood sound systems, claiming they were “harboring gunmen and radical influence.” Zion Juby, already a voice of the ghetto youth, responded not with a bullet—but with “Operation Lion’s Gate.”
Disguised as a roots reggae single, the song was in fact a coded communication between Yardie cliques in Spanish Town and rising Yardie outposts in Liberty City. Lyrics like:
“Mi brethren chant while we circle yard…”
“Quarter past dark, we tek dem gate…”
