Yesterday we had a Navajo guide give us a private tour into Canyon de Chelly. (Pro. Shay). The walls of the canyon grow taller as we descend into the canyon until they are 1000 ft tall. Some of the Navajo spend their summer months living in the canyon where they farm a little and the winter in a second home above the rim of the canyon. Several cliff dwellings are in Canyon de Chelly from 800-1000yrs old. The occupants left pictographs on the canyon walls. Archaeologists know that these were drawn after the Spaniards arrived because the men are on horseback. The men with broad torsos are believed to represent the Spanish wearing armor. Note the car partially submerged in a quicksand.
