Memphis Youth Symphony Program

Memphis Youth Symphony Program MYSP celebrates musical development in a fun, inclusive, and collaborative community.

YOUTH SYMPHONY (YS) - Kalena Bovell, Conductor
- Full Orchestra: strings, winds, brass, percussion, harp
- Advanced experience level
- Ages ~13-18 (no age limits)
- Four local concerts per season (including a possible Side-by-Side concert or rehearsal with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra)
- Annual Concerto Competition
- Rehearses Sunday from 5:30-8pm at The University of Memphis

STRING ORCHESTRA

(SO) - Dr. Selim Giray, Conductor
- All string instruments—violin, viola, cello, bass
- Training group for Youth Symphony
- Intermediate to advanced experience level
- Ages ~11-18 (no age limits)
- Four local concerts per season
- Performs standard string orchestra repertoire and reductions of orchestral literature
- Rehearses Sunday from 2:30-4:30pm at The University of Memphis

Intermezzo Orchestra (IO)- Chelsea Subick, Conductor
-All string instruments — violin, viola, cello, bass
-Training group for String Orchestra
-Intermediate experience level
-Performs upper middle school level orchestral repertoire
-Ages 10-16 approximately
-Five concerts per season
-Rehearses Sunday afternoons, 1:15-2:30pm, September-May

PRELUDE STRINGS (PS) - Kristi Harrington, Conductor
- All string instruments—violin, viola, cello, bass
- Training group for String Orchestra
- Intermediate experience level
- Ages ~8-14 (no age limits)
- Four local concerts per season
- Rehearses Sunday from 1:00-2:15pm at The University of Memphis

WIND ENSEMBLE (WE) - Thomas Richardson, Conductor
- Full wind ensemble: Woodwind, Brass & Percussion instruments
- Advanced experience level: Grades 8+
- 2 concerts per season
- Rehearses Sundays from 3-4:30pm at The University of Memphis

CONCERT BAND (CB) - Kevin Carpenter, Conductor
- Woodwind, Brass & Percussion instruments
- Beginner-Intermediate experience level: Grades 7+ with at least 2 years of experience
- 2 concerts per season
- Rehearses Sundays from 1-2:30pm at The University of Memphis

We’re excited to welcome Jennifer Gunn from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for a special flute & piccolo masterclass! 🎶🪈

Join us on Saturday, May 16 from 12:00–1:30pm at the Beethoven Club for an afternoon of music, learning, and inspiration with one of today’s leading orchestral flutists.

This event is FREE and open to the public! All are welcome!
