Emily Carter never expected a family heirloom to change her life.
While cleaning her late grandmother's basement, she uncovered a forgotten cedar chest. Inside, beneath faded letters and dried lavender, rested a velvet jewelry box. The necklace within was unlike anything she'd seen, a silver pendant of intertwining oak branches surrounding a deep violet crystal etched with ancient runes.
The moment she clasped it around her neck, the basement lights flickered. For a heartbeat, whispers drifted through the air before silence returned.
The next morning, downtown Memphis felt...different. Murals shimmered, strange symbols appeared in old brickwork, and on Beale Street stood a storefront she'd swear had never existed.
Witches' Whimsy Emporium
Est. 1841
Curiosity drew her inside.
The shop was impossibly large, filled with floating lanterns, enchanted books, and shelves overflowing with magical curiosities.
"You're staring," a voice observed.
Emily looked down.
A white cat with one black paw watched her from the counter, one eye blue, the other green.
"I expected something scarier," she admitted.
"I am terrifying," the cat replied.
She blinked.
"You...talk."
"Obviously."
Instead of panicking, she laughed.
"I think I've skipped straight past panic."
"A sensible decision."
The cat hopped down and circled her before stopping beneath the necklace.
"Hm."
He leaned closer, sniffed once, and his playful expression vanished.
"That's old."
"I found it in my grandmother's basement."
"I suspect your grandmother knew more than she ever shared."
Footsteps echoed as a woman emerged carrying a stack of books.
"You've met Shadowpaw," she smiled. "I'm Lia. Welcome to Witches' Whimsy."
Her eyes settled on the pendant.
"An Oakheart Necklace... I haven't seen one in person."
Emily looked between the talking cat, the impossible shop, and the woman smiling knowingly.
"So... magic is real?"
Lia nodded.
"It always has been. You've simply learned how to see it."
For the first time in her life, the world didn't feel stranger.
