$30 + 1 Drink = 30 Minutes of Conversation and Dance!

Start your weekend early and come to our very first Thursday night Dance In 30! This show is designed to engage our patrons with low barriers to entry to make for a fun time seeing beautiful dance, enjoying conversation with other art lovers, and moving along to the next thing. We are limited to only TWO performances, so once they are gone, they are gone!

Rehearsal director Julie Niekrasz brings back “Sa Voix,” and artistic director Steven McMahon restages “Being Here With Other People,” a work he created many years ago and continues to revise. It’s a little different each time. Don’t miss it!

Happy HAPPY birthday to Matthew Cunningham!

This Pleasant View, Utah native made his Ballet Memphis debut nearly three years ago as Demetrius in A Midsummer Night’s Dream!

When asked about his special talent, he said he does a really good Jennifer Coolidge impression. Like this post and maybe we can convince him to do it for us!

He says he is “joyous, energetic, and authentic” and wants you to know “I’m very excited to perform for everyone and I hope you find the love for ballet as much as my colleagues and I do!”

You can see him in Dance in 30 opening NEXT Thursday for a two show run. Get tickets at link here - https://purchase.balletmemphis.org/EventAvailability?EventId=7801

His favorite musical artists are Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, and Ariana Grande and I think we should give him the aux cord to play that all through the building today! Have a wonderful birthday and we are SO GLAD you are here in Memphis!

With summer coming to its official close, it’s time to report what our company artists did over the break!

Cecily Khuner spent five weeks working with Chamber Dance Project in DC where she performed pieces choreographed by Diane Coburn Bruning, William Moore, and Christian Denice, all accompanied by live musicians! Photo credit: Alexander Sargent, courtesy of Chamber Dance Project.

In June Iori Araya was at Northwest Florida Ballet for the FIFTH time under Todd Allen to teach at their 4 week summer intensive, and in July she danced at National Choreographer Initiative under Molly Lynch with another Ballet Memphis dancer, Darcy McLoughlin!

Harry Warshaw says, “This summer, I had the profound joy of being part of JAD Experience’s 2026 production, LUNAE, in Petaluma, California. Over the course of a month, I slept in a tent and spent each day working and dancing outdoors alongside an incredible community of people on a beautiful farm and rehearsing beside a magnificent flower garden. Led by Julia Adam, we came together as a remarkable group of artists to create an immersive experience woven from contemporary ballet, the beauty of nature, loving connection, and farm-to-table fine dining.

Sharing this work in such a thoughtful and nurturing environment deepened my belief in dance’s power to connect us—to one another, to the world around us, and to something larger than ourselves.

I’m endlessly grateful to Julia and Aaron, the JAD team, my fellow dancers, and every person who poured their creativity, generosity, and heart into this unforgettable experience. I leave LUNAE carrying lasting inspiration, cherished connections, and a renewed appreciation for the community that brings art to life. 🤍”

Darcy McLoughlin performed a solo choreographed by fellow Ballet Memphis dancer Emilia Sandoval at the Manhattan Youth Ballet’s 2026 Gala, and danced at the National Choreographers Initiative “NCI The Last Dance” where she performed pieces by Emily Adams and Dayoung Jung.

Phoebe Magna, Cayce Cavett, and Gretchen Vander Bloomer all danced at Terpsicorps Theatre of Dance in Asheville, NC.

Emilia Sandoval did an Intensive Workshop with choreographer Imre VanOpstal, and went to Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon National Park with her boyfriend and sometimes collaborator, Aaron James!

Angelina Broad, Demetrious Reed, Anwen Brown, and Emilia Sandoval were all mentors in the Ballet Memphis School Advanced Summer Intensive! This year we had students from around the region who auditioned during multi-city tours and we even offered dorm housing through University of Memphis! It was bigger and better than ever, and we are so grateful that we had some of our professional company artists sharing their time and talents to help young dancers.

It’s great having everyone back! Come see our dancers in their first performance, Dance In 30, just over TWO WEEKS AWAY on September 17 and 18! Just $30 gets you a beverage of your choice and time to mingle before a 30 minute performance that leaves you inspired and ready to go on with your night! Dance In 30 is in THREE WEEKS! This fall we are opening on a Thursday for a two-night run of the popular short form program that costs only $30!

We welcome the return of rehearsal director Julie Niekrasz’s “Sa Voix,” a beautiful piece highlighting the technical abilities of our company paired with artistic director Steven McMahon’s “Being Here With Other People,” about the fun in sharing dance.

Doors open at 6pm for a social half hour (your ticket price includes a beer, wine, or soda) immediately followed by the performance to have you out of the door around 7pm to go explore nearby Overton Square or elsewhere! See you there!

Tickets available here https://purchase.balletmemphis.org/EventAvailability?EventId=7801

Ballet Memphis is missing Dolly already. Here is a photo from Steven McMahon’s ode to some of Dolly’s lesser known songs, “A Rare and Gentle Thing,” performed at Winter Mix in 2024.

We will always love you, Dolly. Thanks for all you did for your fellow Tennesseans and others.

Let’s get Friday started by introducing our newest company member, Isaac Lee!

Isaac is originally from Urbana, IL and previously danced with Nashville Ballet II, Grand Rapids Ballet, and Charlottesville Ballet.

His favorite ballet is Cinderella, which he says is “a story as old as human civilization that when told through dance and Prokofiev’s sweepingly emotional score attests to the magic of stage performance and ballet!”

If he could have a super power, it would be super speed so that he could get a lot more done in a day!

He wants our followers to know he is ecstatic to be joining Ballet Memphis, and Memphis as a city, and he is ready to showcase that in our upcoming performances!

We are so happy you are here with us, Isaac!

Follow Isaac Isaac Lee and like this post to welcome him!
