Howard Shore didn't just score Middle-earth — he gave every culture its own musical identity. The Shire, Rohan, Mordor, Lothlórien… each one has a theme you can hum. THAT is worldbuilding.

Most sci-fi composers chase the spectacle. The great ones score the silence before it.
The first heptapod reveal in Arrival — 12 seconds, one sustained low cello note. No swell. No payoff. Jóhannsson lets the audience's own held breath do the work.
The rule: score the spectacle and you compete with the visual. Score the silence and you OWN it.
Save this for the next sci-fi scene you score.

How many of my fellow creatives feel this way?

When you watched Hereditary, you never thought saxophone
Trick 1 — extended subharmonics. Stetson plays BELOW the horn's traditional range using overtone manipulation. Your ear hears low frequencies that should not be possible.
Trick 2 — close-mic the body, not the bell. He places contact mics on the keys and the neck, NOT in front of the horn. You hear the mechanism, the breath, the spit. The instrument disappears.
Trick 3 — slap-tongue percussion. Treated as rhythm, not melody. It sounds like teeth or knuckles. Place that under a slow shot and the audience cannot separate sound from object.

For me its starts with a spotting session....
and tempo maps.
I worked to get good at watching something and feeling what the tempo should be
For me this greatly improved my workflow

Look for work in multiple lanes?
Whats your take?

Greatness is what you stack when nobody's watching.
The 11 PM session. The cue you rewrote a fourth time.
The pitch nobody answered. None of it gets a post —
but it's compounding into the career you're trying to build.
Keep stacking.

Arrangement and Balance
1. Make sure the arrangement of the cue works
2. Lock in blance and automation
3. Subtract before adding any eq or compression.

You don't need a $5,000 sample library to start scoring film.
These free virtual instruments will get you from "I want to compose"
to "I'm composing" — today. No excuses, no upgrades, just write.
Save this so you've got it when you're ready to start.

The first note of any score is a promise.
Everything that follows — every cue, every silence,
every layer — has to keep it.
Follow for more from inside the room.
