There’s a new face at Memphis Zoo! 💛

Born August 16, Millie is the first mandrill ever born at Memphis Zoo after nearly a decade of caring for the species. As part of the AZA Species Survival Plan, her arrival is also an important addition to the mandrill population.

Millie’s mom, Kamani, is a first-time mother, and although she gave birth naturally, she was initially unsure how to care for her baby. Veterinary and primate teams determined that temporarily stepping in was the best way to give both mom and baby a chance to succeed. For the first couple of weeks, keepers cared for Millie and gave her round-the-clock care. Throughout the process, she remained in the mandrill nighthouse with Kamani, dad Babu, and aunt Gertie always nearby where they could see her.

Over the past couple days, Millie reintegrated her with her mom and troop, and we’re excited to share that everyone is together and doing well!

The mandrill family now has access to their yard at Zambezi River Hippo Camp, so keep an eye out for a tiny new face exploring alongside her family.

Exclusive clip from “Orangutan Village: Part 2”🎥🦧

While Ruhana’s mother, Jahe, recovered from surgery, the primate team temporarily hand-reared Ruhana until mother and baby were ready to be reintroduced. In this special clip, primate keepers Laine and Peyton work together to give the vocal infant one of her round-the-clock feedings.
