Come witness an electric, immersive world of soundscapes which push the boundaries of what is possible with a single instrument! 

On Friday, October 9th, Crosstown Arts welcomes 2025 Guggenheim fellow and Downbeat Award-winning saxophonist Caroline Davis to the Green Room for a one-night-only solo performance blending creative improvisation with electronic media. Davis’s work spans a wide range of creative contexts, rooted in improvisation and social inquiry. She has released eight albums as a leader and collaborated with artists such as Allison Miller, Lee Konitz, John Zorn, Terri Lyne Carrington, Angelica Sanchez, The Femme Jam, Miles Okazaki, Nicole Mitchell, Rajna Swaminathan, and Matt Mitchell. Her most recent release, Portals, explores themes of grief and memory, and she is also a contributor to Terri Lyne Carrington’s New Standards, a landmark collection of jazz compositions by female-identifying composers.

Crosstown Arts Presents: Salo Pallini “Some Air” Record Release Show 

Join us in the Crosstown Arts Theater to celebrate Memphis-based instrumental group Salo Pallini and their upcoming record release entitled “Some Air”! 

Salo Pallini began as a four-piece instrumental group from Memphis, TN, built around an unusual idea: create a musical accompaniment to Kurt Vonnegut’s 1959 novel The Sirens of Titan. The result was The Sirens of Titan: A Preemptive Scoring, an 11-song debut recorded in the historic home of renowned Civil War historian Shelby Foote. The record established the band’s self-described sound of “progressive Latin space country” and the larger concept of preemptively scoring literary works bound for the screen.

For their second record, Salo Pallini is taking a very different approach. While the band’s debut was entirely instrumental, the new album places the human voice at the center of the music, with a different singer featured on every song. Rather than settling on a single frontperson, the band has built each track around the character of its guest vocalist, allowing the record to shift voices, perspectives and personalities from song to song while retaining Salo Pallini’s distinct musical identity.

Crosstown Arts presents: Dave Soldier, Alex Greene, & Friends present The LeWitt Etudes

New York-based composer Dave Soldier (John Cale, The Kropotkins, Thai Elephant Orchestra, Guided By Voices) joins Alex Greene (Rolling Head Orchestra, Echo Party) and other Memphians for a new expression of his LeWitt Etudes: Fifty Architectural Designs for Musicians (2015, Op. 34). Using that roadmap for groups composing in the moment, the players take prompts from Dave's playbook and run with them in their own wild ways, with results ranging from hypnotic world-building to gorgeous laments. This Memphis version is sure to invoke some blues. The band features Ra-Kalam Bob Moses on drums and gonzo percussion, Greene on piano and synthesizer, Art Edmaiston and Chad Fowler on saxes and flute, Garry Burnside on guitar, Lorette Velvette on guitar, voice, and fife, Yella P on harmonica, and Sean Murphy on tuba and more. Dave will take up his trusty violin, mandolin, and banjo not even knowing where his etudes, which emulate rules for visual artists set down in Sol LeWitt's Wall Drawings series, will lead. Blending powerful vocals, beloved holiday favorites, soulful reinterpretations, and moving moments of storytelling, the evening celebrates the beauty, warmth, joy, and emotion of this special time of year. Set inside the intimate atmosphere of The Green Room, SOUL OF THE SEASON creates a space where performer and audience share the same room, the same stories, and the same spirit—celebrating the people, memories, traditions, and music that make the season meaningful.

ABOUT KORTLAND WHALUM:

Whalum is a distinguished performing artist whose work continues to make an impact across the cultural landscape of Memphis and beyond. He is a featured performer with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra Big Band and made history as the first artist to lead the Memphis Symphony Orchestra’s Valentine’s Day performances, establishing a new artistic chapter in the orchestra’s annual celebration of love and music. He has also performed with the Tennessee Ballet Theater, further demonstrating his versatility as a vocalist and collaborator across artistic disciplines. His contributions to the arts and the cultural vitality of his community have been recognized by the Tennessee State Senate, as well as through the “Shining Star” Award presented by Mayor Lee Harris. Most recently, Whalum took center stage as the headliner of the 44th Alcorn State University Jazz Festival, Mississippi’s longest-running jazz festival—further cementing his reputation as a dynamic vocalist and celebrated live performer.
