Kathy O. Lofton is an actress, award-winning indie filmmaker, director, photographer, content writer and published author. The Memphis native also consults and delivers media services and advocacy programming under her small business, Lofton Media. Her empl

oyment history includes working in the government, recreation, financial, health care, logistics, non-profit, communications, and education sectors. Amid her career jobs, she has served as a substitute teacher for nearly 15 years in both suburban and inner-city schools, working with mainstream, marginal, and special needs students. Vocational education and curriculum development for at-risk young adults seeking a GED and job skills training was among the first of her full-time jobs. Kathy has actively supported her local community by sitting on non-profit boards, assuming leadership roles in organizations, and volunteering. She is a former chapter president of the National Black MBA Association, where she served as a CEO advisory board member and received the “Chapter of the Year” award two consecutive years. She is the only one with this distinction in the history of the Memphis, TN chapter. Over the years, she has been nominated and/or received recognition culminating in seven awards on the local and national levels. One example is her gifts leading to a first-place win in a national essay contest hosted by Samsung Electronics. Her winnings were directed to benefit an inner-city elementary school in dire need of updated technical resources. Another is hailing as one of the top 3 finalists and a monetary prize winner in a community-themed PSA competition sponsored by Facing History and Ourselves, Bridges, and the National Civil Rights Museum. Her PSA concept focused on the possibilities for the youth males in detention at Juvenile Court in Downtown Memphis. Vulnerable populations, especially the elderly and impaired, are a strong area of purpose for this generational family caregiver. "Kathy O" is a graduate of the Fogelman College of Business at the former Memphis State University (BBA), Union University (Executive MBA,) and Baruch College/Austin W. Marxe School of Public and International Affairs at CUNY (MPA). Her Master of Public Administration degree was attained via a highly competitive public service fellowship. She is a 2007 National Urban Fellow, and 2004 graduate of Nexus Leadership, and a 2010 graduate of Leadership Memphis. She is slated to receive a professional certificate in community transformation in 2022 from Union University’s Center for Theological and Urban Studies.

I'm so proud to announce that after 23 years of doing work with the NAACP ACT-SO, we've been blessed with achieving the top three spots again this year in The 2025 Memphis Regional NAACP ACT-SO for Filmmaking!

Brooklynn Williams rose to the top, taking home the gold with her amazing project on her great-grandfather, the renowned Civil Rights Photographer and Filmmaker, Mr. Ernest Withers.

Ryann Clark seized the silver for her amazing project on her cousin, the fearless Civil Rights Leader, Medgar Evers.

TreDarius Houston took home the bronze for his very amazing project on Student Mental Health and Depression.

Huge thanks to my exceptional judges, Tamela Woods-Calvin, Kathy O Lofton, and Janesha Alma Cade, who provided invaluable feedback, expert advice, and praise that left the students knowledgeable of how important their films were to them.

The judges shared their wisdom, and the students were very thankful for their insight and well wishes.

I'm proud to be my students' teacher and mentor and grateful to be involved with the Memphis Branch of the NAACP ACT-SO.
I'm cheering for all my students to change the world.

Sincerely,
Marshonn Calvin
