Remembering the legendary Sam Moore on what would have been his 91st birthday. 🎶

As one half of the electrifying soul duo Sam & Dave, Moore helped define the sound of Memphis soul with unforgettable hits like “Soul Man,” “Hold On, I’m Comin’” and “I Thank You.”

Known for their explosive performances and powerful gospel-influenced vocals, Sam & Dave became one of the most celebrated acts associated with Stax Records, earning induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1992.

In September 1968, Jack Robinson photographed the duo performing at Madison Square Garden in New York City, capturing the extraordinary energy that made them legends of soul music.

Though Moore passed away in January 2025, his unmistakable voice and musical legacy continue to inspire generations.

Happy 84th birthday to Britt Ekland ✨

Born in Stockholm on October 6, 1942, Britt became one of the most recognizable faces of 1960s and ’70s cinema, with memorable roles in Get Carter, the cult classic The Wicker Man, and opposite Roger Moore as Mary Goodnight in the 1974 James Bond film The Man with the Golden Gun.

Along the way, she stepped in front of Jack Robinson’s camera, joining the remarkable cast of actors, artists, musicians, and cultural figures he photographed during this extraordinary era.

Today we celebrate Britt Ekland and revisit Jack’s portrait of a woman whose unmistakable style and screen presence made her an icon of her generation.

“Fashion is part of the daily air and it changes all the time, with all the events.”

Remembering Diana Vreeland on her birthday, born September 29, 1903.

Few people shaped the look and spirit of 20th-century fashion quite like Vreeland. During her years at Harper’s Bazaar and later as editor-in-chief of Vogue, she became known for her extraordinary eye, her instinct for talent and her belief that fashion could be more than clothing. It could be fantasy, personality, art and culture.

Jack Robinson became part of that world in 1965, when Carrie Donovan joined Vreeland at Vogue and brought Jack into the magazine soon after. During those years, Jack photographed fashion, artists, actors, musicians and many of the personalities who defined the era.

He also traveled with Vreeland and Donovan to the fashion collections in London, Milan and Paris. Vreeland became particularly impressed with Jack’s portrait work and eventually sat for him herself.

After Vogue, Vreeland continued to influence the way fashion was seen and understood through her work with The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, helping turn fashion exhibitions into major cultural events.

Today we celebrate Diana Vreeland, an editor, tastemaker and true original whose influence can still be felt in fashion, photography and culture.

Two years ago today, we lost Kris Kristofferson.

Jack Robinson photographed Kristofferson in New York in December 1970, at a remarkable turning point in his career. He had already written songs that would become American standards, but the full scope of what was ahead of him as a songwriter, performer and actor was only beginning to unfold.

A Rhodes Scholar, former Army helicopter pilot and one-time Columbia Records janitor, Kristofferson took an unlikely road to Nashville and became one of the defining songwriters of his generation. “Me and Bobby McGee,” “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down” and “Help Me Make It Through the Night” are only part of the extraordinary body of work he left behind.

Jack’s portraits capture something of the man himself: thoughtful, unconventional and completely at ease in front of the camera.

57 years ago, Tina Turner stepped in front of Jack Robinson’s camera in New York. This weekend, her story comes home to West Tennessee.

As Tina Turner Heritage Days begins today in Brownsville, Tennessee, we’re looking back at Jack Robinson’s unforgettable 1969 photographs of Tina.

Jack photographed her in New York on November 25, 1969, while she was on tour with the Rolling Stones. The session was photographed for Vogue, capturing the energy, movement and unmistakable presence that would make Tina one of the most iconic performers of her generation.

There is something especially meaningful about sharing these photographs today. Tina’s story began in Nutbush, Tennessee. Jack would eventually leave New York and make Memphis his home, where his own remarkable archive would later be rediscovered.

Two extraordinary Tennessee stories, connected through one afternoon in Jack’s studio.

This weekend, Brownsville celebrates the Queen of Rock ’n’ Roll. We’re honored to celebrate her through Jack’s lens.

A festival lasted three days. Michael Wadleigh helped make sure the world could keep seeing it.

Happy 87th birthday to filmmaker and cinematographer Michael Wadleigh, born September 24, 1939. Wadleigh is best known for directing Woodstock, the groundbreaking 1970 documentary that captured not only the legendary performances, but the crowds, conversations, mud, mayhem, and spirit surrounding the festival.

Working with a large camera crew that included a young Martin Scorsese and Thelma Schoonmaker, Wadleigh helped turn hundreds of thousands of feet of film into a documentary that would go on to win the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature and become one of the defining records of the era.

Jack Robinson photographed Wadleigh in New York in 1970, the same year Woodstock was released.

Yesterday would have been Leonard Cohen’s 92nd birthday.

Jack Robinson photographed Cohen in New York on August 9, 1967, at a fascinating turning point in his life. He was already an accomplished poet and novelist, but his career as a recording artist was only just beginning. Later that year, Songs of Leonard Cohen would introduce his unmistakable voice, and songs like “Suzanne” and “Sisters of Mercy,” to a much wider audience.

Jack’s portraits capture Cohen just before all of that was about to unfold. Thoughtful, quiet and completely himself, he already seems to possess the presence that would come to define so much of his work.

Happy birthday to Chris Calloway. ❤️

Today we’re remembering Chris, born September 21, 1945, and sharing a few photographs that feel especially meaningful to us.

Chris was the daughter of Cab and Nuffie Calloway, pictured here on the February 1955 cover of Ebony, and she grew up surrounded by an extraordinary musical legacy. But these photographs remind us how completely Chris had a presence of her own.

Jack Robinson photographed her in 1968 alongside Hugh Masekela, at a time when “Grazing in the Grass” had recently reached No. 1. Hugh was already a major star, but looking through Jack’s photographs from that day, Chris has a way of pulling you in. There is so much warmth, personality and joy in the way Jack saw her.

Chris went on to perform on Broadway, sing and tour with her father, and build a life and career all her own.

What makes sharing these images even more special today is being able to connect them with the Calloway family, who knew and loved Chris, Cab and Nuffie so well. We’re grateful to help bring these photographs back into the family story.

A birthday, and a memorable day behind the camera.

On September 18, 1969, Jack Robinson turned 41. That same day, he stepped into the studio with Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.

The newly formed supergroup was fresh from its appearance at Woodstock, and Jack photographed the band together as well as creating individual portraits of its members. Today, those images preserve a remarkable moment in music history, but for us, the date carries another meaning too.

Today we celebrate Jack himself, the photographer behind the lens and the extraordinary body of work he left behind.

Happy birthday, Jack. And happy anniversary to one unforgettable session.
