There’s something about Elliott Gould that has always felt a little different.

Funny without trying too hard, effortlessly cool, intelligent, and wonderfully unpredictable, Gould became one of the most distinctive screen presences to emerge from Hollywood in the late 1960s and ’70s. From Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice and MASH* to The Long Goodbye, he built a career playing characters who rarely felt polished or conventional — and that was exactly the appeal.

Tomorrow, August 29, we celebrate Elliott Gould on his birthday with this portrait by Jack Robinson.

If you only know him from his later appearances in films like Ocean’s Eleven — or don’t know him at all — his earlier work is well worth discovering.

Written by Paul McCartney and credited to Lennon–McCartney, the single marked a new chapter for the band as one of their first releases on the Apple label. It went on to spend nine weeks at No. 1 in the United States.

On this day, we remember Julie Harris, one of the great actresses of the American stage.

Across a career spanning more than six decades, Harris brought remarkable depth and sensitivity to roles ranging from Sally Bowles in I Am a Camera and Emily Dickinson in The Belle of Amherst to Abra in East of Eden. Her extraordinary work earned her five Tony Awards and a lasting place in American theater history.

Jack Robinson photographed Harris around 1970, capturing the quiet presence and expressiveness that defined so much of her work.

Remembering Julie Harris, who passed away on August 24, 2013, at the age of 87.

Two visionaries. Two very different worlds. One photographer.
Today we remember Robert Moog, who died on August 21, 2005, and tomorrow, Diana Vreeland, who died on August 22, 1989.

Moog changed the sound of modern music, opening new possibilities for generations of musicians through the development of the Moog synthesizer. Vreeland changed the way the world looked at fashion, first through the pages of Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue, and later through her influential work at The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute.

Jack Robinson photographed them both—Moog alongside the instrument that would help reshape popular music, and Vreeland, the legendary Vogue editor who recognized and encouraged Jack’s own talent.

This weekend, we remember two remarkable figures whose imaginations helped change the way a generation sounded and looked.

On National Photography Day, we look back at another defining moment in visual and cultural history: Woodstock.

Held August 15–18, 1969, the festival brought together some of the most influential musicians of their generation. Among them were several subjects photographed by Jack Robinson — The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Joe Cocker, CSNY, Sly Stone, and Johnny Winter

Robinson also photographed filmmaker Michael Wadleigh, whose landmark documentary Woodstock helped preserve the festival for generations to come.

Through photography and film, moments become memory — and more than half a century later, the faces, music, and spirit of Woodstock remain unmistakable.

Today, as the sun came up, a brilliant double rainbow stretched across the morning sky-a breathtaking reminder of Dan’s vibrant spirit, his passion, and the light he brought to everyone who knew him.

He had a rare gift for seeing the beauty in raw materials and transforming them into something enduring. That same vision and care defined his final mission: ensuring Jack’s work would live on, preserved and celebrated for generations to come.

This week we remember two remarkable figures photographed by Jack Robinson who shared the same date of passing: Aretha Franklin and Henry Geldzahler.
Franklin’s incomparable voice helped reshape American music, while Geldzahler became an influential presence in the New York art world. Though their paths were very different, each left an enduring mark on twentieth-century culture.

Through Robinson’s photographs, we remember their lives, their work, and the legacies that continue to resonate today.
