All-American Concert is 'Coming Home' June 10 & 11
Melbourne Community Orchestra plays music of America’s best
(MELBOURNE, FL) – As the nation’s 250th birthday approaches, the Melbourne Community Orchestra will celebrate with Coming Home: A Musical Tribute to America, a pair of concerts at 7:00 PM on Wednesday and Thursday evenings, June 10 & 11 at the Melbourne Auditorium at 625 Hibiscus Boulevard, 32901. After the “Star-Spangled Banner,” the first part of the program will be a salute to two American female composers. Joan Tower’s 13-minute Made in America transforms “America the Beautiful” into a dramatic musical journey, reflecting on the composer’s appreciation for the everyday freedoms and comforts of the United States. The orchestra will also perform the first movement of Jennifer Higdon’s City Scape, which blends the bold urban energy of Atlanta with moments of natural serenity to evoke the city’s personality. The remainder of the concert is dedicated to Aaron Copland’s heroic Symphony No. 3. Few composers have distilled the sound of the nation quite like Copland. His immensely popular four-movement work is the quintessential "Great American Symphony" --a radiant affirmation of resilience and national spirit. Composed between 1944 and 1946, Symphony No. 3 captures the nation’s euphoria at the end of World War II and famously incorporates the triumphant Fanfare for the Common Man in its finale. Those who arrive early to Coming Home will be treated to a 6:15 PM pre-show, appropriately featuring musicians on fife and drum. Admission to Coming Home: A Musical Tribute to America and all Melbourne Community Orchestra concerts is free. The 65-member group conducted by Mark Nelson is the Orchestra in Residence for the City of Melbourne. Call 321-285-6724 or visit MCOrchestra.org for more information or to sign up for concert alerts.
