On this day in 1949, the matriarch of the Rossetter family died. Ella Maud Rogero Rossetter was 76 when she passed in Eau Gallie. She was of Minorcan descent and loved to socialize. Upon moving to Eau Gallie with her family in 1908, she quickly went about finding a traveling Catholic priest to say mass and hold confession in the parlor of Rossetter House. This later grew into Ascension Catholic Church, which can still be found in Melbourne today. Her daughters Carrie and Ella placed this grotto near the home in her memory.

This letter dated August 29th, 1983 was signed by President Ronald Reagan, congratulating Carrie Rossetter on her retirement. Did you know Carrie held her oil distributorship for a record-breaking 62 years? "Many years of accomplishment" indeed!

People on tours ask us regularly about the old oak trees in Rossetter Park. Well, at one time Highland Ave used to be covered in old oak trees much like this picture! Over the years and various hurricanes they slowly dwindled down to the rather sunny street we know today. Interested in seeing this street today and learning more about its history? The Rossetter House as you see it today was completed in 1908, which makes it over 115 years old. The front part that you see here is actually the newer of the two original structures, built in the late 1890s. In 1908 it was barged over Elbow Creek from modern Ballard Park after Mr. James Rossetter purchased only the building, excluding land, from Mr. Aspinwall who was a northern industrialist that liked to winter here in Brevard. This is why it became known as the Aspinwall wing. Rossetter had it taken apart by his ship builders and put back together on the property he purchased from Mr. William Roesch and where we can see it today. We're in for another hot week! ☀️ This is your sign to grab some friends for a beach day, just like Carrie in these photos from about 100 years ago. Other than the fabulous swimsuits, these don't look so different from fun beach pictures anyone might take today!

On this day in 1900, Ella Rossetter was born! She was a well-known businesswoman in the area. While her sister Carrie is known for running the Standard Oil distributorship, Ella had her own insurance office which she started and ran. She is also credited with starting the first library in Eau Gallie, as she loved books and wanted to be able to share them with people. This little lending library was also run from her insurance office. She loved to garden, and today we base our gardens after many of her original plans and layouts. Ella died in in 1993 at the age of 92.

Ella Rossetter was a big fan of cooking and baking, and even received an honorary culinary degree from the Florida Institute of Technology. She also collected recipes such as this one for stuffed flounder from 1958. Try it for yourself and let us know what you think!

Don’t you just love how unique our local ecology is? Other people did too, especially as tourists and locals alike used to love to hunt and fish while Florida was being developed. Carrie and Ella can be seen here around the fire on a hunting trip, but look at how much growth there was around them! This picture was likely taken in the late 1920s or early 1930s in the area of West Melbourne, and it demonstrates just how much plant life people had to navigate around that allows for such a wonderful ecosystem.
