TerraTx Art Fest

TerraTx Art Fest Murals & land art across Leakey + Concan
Sept 25–27, 2026 • Texas Hill Country
Presented by The Infrathin Artist Residency

This year, we celebrate 100 years of the Neal family’s presence in Concan.

One hundred years of jumping off the Big Rock. One hundred years of chicken fried steak at Neal’s Dining Room. One hundred years of pear salad. One hundred years of family vacations, summer memories, and stories passed from one generation to the next.

That legacy gave us places like Frio’s Dry Fifty, Buchanan Cabins, Neal’s Dining Room, and Neal’s Backyard, all still connected to and cared for by members of the Neal family today.

As we began researching the history of the Frio Canyon, it became clear that the Neal family’s story is inseparable from the story of this place. It only felt right to honor them as they celebrate this remarkable milestone.

Artist Matt Tumlinson’s work often explores the relationship between past and present, making him the perfect artist to pair with Ms. Helen, Gayle, Susan, and Mary Anna. Together, they shared stories of growing up along the Frio River, stories that will now help inspire a new artwork for the TerraTx Art Trail.

We can’t wait to share what Matt creates.

Join us September 25-27 for TerraTx Art Fest.

FEATURED PRESENTER: Macedonio S. Elías III

TerraTx Art Fest is honored to welcome Macedonio Elias as a featured presenter for our 2026 festival.

A leatherworker, artist, and storyteller, Mace’s work is rooted in craftsmanship, cultural heritage, and a deep connection to the land. His handcrafted leather pieces have been worn by artists including Post Malone, while his work as a presenter and culture bearer explores the stories, traditions, and knowledge passed from one generation to the next.

As part of this year’s theme, Legends of the Land, Macedonio will share perspectives on the relationship between people, place, history, and traditional craftsmanship. Through conversation, demonstration, and storytelling, he’ll help us explore how the skills and traditions of the past continue to shape our communities today.

TerraTx brings together artists, historians, musicians, conservationists, and culture bearers to celebrate the stories that make the Frio Canyon unique. We’re excited to have Macedonio join that conversation.

We’re excited to introduce Carmen Rangel as one of the featured artists of TerraTx Art Fest 2026.

Carmen will create an earthen mosaic inspired by the native plants of the Frio Canyon, developed in collaboration with a local native plant expert. Her piece will celebrate the beauty, resilience, and ecological importance of the landscapes that make this region so special.

This artwork is also a testament to what can happen when a community comes together. The project was funded through a partnership between local supporters and Real County, with the community raising its portion of the funding in just two days.

Two days.

That incredible show of support speaks volumes about how much this area values art, culture, and the stories that connect us to the land.

We can’t wait to watch Carmen bring this piece to life and add another chapter to the growing TerraTx Art Trail.

The story of the Texas Hill Country is written in limestone canyons, spring-fed rivers, native grasslands, and plants like antelope horn milkweed that have called this place home for thousands of years.

During TerraTx, we will be exploring the connection between art, history, ecology, and place. We believe the land itself is one of our greatest storytellers. Every native plant, every pollinator, every stretch of open ranchland carries a piece of the story that makes the Frio Canyon unique.

That’s why conservation is woven throughout TerraTx. Through art installations, conversations with local experts, and hands-on experiences, we’ll celebrate not only the history of this region, but also the landscapes and ecosystems that make it worth preserving for future generations.

Because when we protect the land, we’re protecting the stories, traditions, and beauty that grow from it.

Join us September 26–27 as we explore the legends of the land.

Let’s talk goats. Angora goats, to be specific.

The story of the Angora goat is woven into the story of the Frio Canyon itself. For generations, ranchers across Real County and the surrounding Edwards Plateau raised Angora goats, helping build one of the most important mohair-producing regions in the world. Mohair shaped the economy, culture, and ranching traditions of this area, and its legacy can still be seen across the Hill Country today.

At TerraTx, we’re excited to welcome John Allen “Jad” Davis and his Angora goats, descendants of some of the earliest Angora goat bloodlines brought to this region. Visitors will have the chance to meet the goats, learn about the history of mohair, and experience a living connection to one of the Frio Canyon’s most enduring traditions.

We’ll also have demonstrations that help tell the full story, from the animals themselves to the fiber they produce and the crafts that transformed mohair into a way of life. And we’re cooking up something special with Dolores Unique Designs , a true legend in the mohair industry, whose work helps connect this ranching tradition to the present day. More details on that coming soon.

History isn’t just something you read about. Sometimes it still has four legs and a shaggy coat.

Join us September 26 at the Concan Visitor Center and discover how one remarkable animal helped shape the culture, economy, and identity of the Texas Hill Country.

And yes, you’ll get to meet the cutest goat in Texas. 🐐

***UPDATE $50 left!!!!***

$150 LEFT!

That’s all we need to fully fund the Neal’s 100 Year Celebration artwork.

From local folks to summer visitors who’ve been coming here for generations, to the many branches of the Neal family tree, we’ve watched this community rally around a project that celebrates the people and stories that made this place what it is. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

Now we’re down to the final $150.

Who’s going to be the hero who closes it out?

Any takers? 🤪

Big thank you to Mural Supply Co for their support, guidance, and expertise throughout the TerraTx Art Fest journey.

Their knowledge and generosity have been invaluable as we work to bring public art to the Frio Canyon, and we are grateful to have them as a partner in helping turn this vision into reality. They have generously met with us countless times, answered endless questions, and let us pick their brains as we’ve navigated the many moving pieces of creating a public art festival from the ground up.

From mural logistics and wall preparation to artist support and installation planning, their willingness to share their experience has helped us avoid mistakes, think bigger, and move forward with confidence.

We are incredibly grateful for their partnership and for their commitment to helping bring meaningful public art to our community.

CALL FOR CREATIVES

TerraTx is a weekend that celebrates the stories, culture, history, ecology, and creative spirit of the Frio Canyon, and we’re looking for more people who want to be part of it.

Are you an artist? A maker? A musician? A poet? A historian? A naturalist? Do you have a hands-on activity, demonstration, exhibit, performance, or creative idea you’d like to share with the community?

We want to hear from you.

While our public art commissions for 2026 have been filled, we’re actively looking for artists, vendors, exhibitors, educators, and collaborators who would like to participate throughout the festival weekend.

If you have something that helps people connect with the history, culture, ecology, or creative spirit of this place, send us a message and tell us about it. We are looking for all kinds of cool collaborations!

ARTIST ANNOUNCEMENT!

We’re honored to welcome artist Matt Tumlinson to TerraTx Art Fest.

Matt’s work has always felt right at home in places like Leakey and Concan. There’s something about the way he blends old and new, past and present, that feels deeply connected to the Frio Canyon. His work honors history without feeling stuck in it. It feels timeless, but also incredibly relevant to the people and places that shape our lives today.

For this project, Matt will be working with Gayle Korbell and Helen Buchanan of the Neal family, two women who carry some of the very best stories of the Frio. Through conversations about family, tourism, river culture, and the generations of Texans who have made memories here, Matt will create a permanent public artwork inspired by their stories and legacy.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Neal family’s presence in Concan, making it the perfect time to honor a family whose impact on the Frio Canyon is impossible to overstate. Their story is woven into the story of the Frio River itself, and we can’t wait to see how Matt translates those memories into a work of art that will become part of the TerraTx Art Trail for years to come.

Through TerraTx we hope to preserve local stories, celebrate the people who shaped this place, and create something new that future generations can connect with.

Stay tuned. More artist announcements are coming soon.
