As an active competitive ballroom dancer (specializing in the American Smooth and Rhythm) who has undergone over a decade of musical training, I pride myself on cultivating a music collection that is up to date, exciting, and inspiring for dancers in all competitive styles from the Newcomer level all the way up to Open. My philosophy as a competitive ballroom DJ:
I believe that competition music
should fill the dancer with an energy that forces them to move, to connect to a partner, to connect to an audience, to hit harder or to sustain longer. Competition music should challenge the dancer to be creative and fresh while still telling the story of the dance: the romance of the Waltz, the flirty banter of the Cha Cha, the passion of the Tango, the carnival atmosphere of the Samba. Competition music should be a good mix of classic songs and contemporary songs. Competition music should be the appropriate tempo and maintain a regular rhythm — no strange intros, no gaps that cause the music to skip and come back on a different beat. Competition music should also match the style for which it’s being played.
