Novella Acting Studio ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR:

Beth Sobo Turk, originally from upstate NY, has been a professional performing artist for almost 20 years.

Intimate, honest & grounded in story, Novella Acting Studio is a safe space for actors & singers to explore the art of storytelling onstage, bringing to life each small story, moment captured & vignette painted through monologue, scene & song. Her love for storytelling through music and theater was nurtured during her college years, where she studied and performed in over a dozen shows. She went o

n to tour Canada and the USA with the North American tour of Jesus Christ Superstar (starring Ted Neely and Corey Glover), traveled the globe performing aboard the Luxury Yachts of Seabourn, and has appeared on the stages of regional theaters across the US. Beth arrived in Oregon in 2010 to perform the title role of Gracie in the world premiere musical - Gracie and the Atom at Artist Repertory Theater, and fell completely in love with Portland and its thriving theater community. After several years of working in Portland theaters, she married, started her family and now calls the charming wine-country community of McMinnville her home, where she raises two wonderful boys with her husband Jeshua and is deeply involved in her local community theater. Beth now teaches Vocal Performance at Bridgetown Conservatory Salem and provides professional coaching and instruction through her private acting studio, NOVELLA, in McMinnville. A proud former member of Actors Equity, Beth's professional credits include performances and projects with Bridgetown Conservatory, Artists Repertory Theater, Lakewood Center for the Performing Arts, Portland Playhouse, Broadway Rose, Stumptown Stages, LIVE On Stage, The Rubicon Theater (CA), The Miracle Theater (Pigeon Forge, TN) and numerous shows with Portland's well-loved cabaret series, Cabaret White. Beth has also been seen often on the stages of her community theater- Gallery Theater- in Fly By Night (Miriam), Into the Woods (Baker's Wife), Beauty and the Beast (Belle), Trifles (Mrs. Peters) and The God Game (Lisa). Beth is represented by The Option Agency in Portland and has been seen in several PNW commercials, which can be seen on her professional Instagram page (Beth Sobo Turk).

It's a whole new year and a few (hard-to-come-by) Saturday slots just opened up for private coaching! Preparing for an audition? Have a competition coming up? I nearly ran out of room congratulating my Novella students on all of their wins this month!! September is a big month for auditions, and I have been OVER-the-MOON to be on the other end of the line for all of your phone calls and texts sharing the good news! You each worked so hard to be prepared for your auditions and have solidly earned these opportunities. I am so proud of you all! Now go have fun telling these stories!

CLASS DESCRIPTION:
The aim of this Vocal Performance workshop is to give individuals a warm, intimate, safe and supportive space within which to practice their craft, to grow as actors and to connect with other like-minded artists in the community. This class offers the opportunity to build your audition book, expand your repertoire, and to dive deeper into more honest and grounded storytelling. Students will choose 1-2 songs from the musical theater genre to work on within the 6 week time-frame, with the majority of the work of learning your song being done at home. Come with a strong handle on your music, and we'll begin to unravel the layers of the story you're wanting to tell. An experienced accompanist will be at every class to accompany you and to help with any challenge spots in the song. The focus of each class will be on the art of storytelling. Each week, students will get up one at a time and work on their song in front of their peers, with feedback from myself and your accompanist, Anne Britt. You will have the opportunity to learn from me, from your accompanist, and from each other.

Whew! 😅 That’s a wrap! Thank you, sweet space, for housing my passion project this summer: Novella Acting Studio. You gave us the perfect place to gather, feel safe, be heard, get connected and tell some really meaningful & fun stories. Eighteen students stepped through your doors six weeks ago, super nervous and not sure what they were getting into. And today, you held them all as they got up in front of friends & family and gave a performance that made the whole room FEEL. I teared up so many times, still laughed at the songs I’ve been hearing for weeks, and couldn’t stop holding my heart and beaming from ear-to-ear. Thank you to each of you for going on this adventure with me! My cup is so full! 🙏🏻🎶💛
