🇺🇸 FOUR YEARS OF FLAG #28 | THE DAVILA FAMILY

Four years ago, on August 28, 2022, Dr. Julian Davila placed the winning bid on BDC Flag #28 at the HSE Hockey Club Topgolf fundraiser.

What began with a silent auction has become something much bigger.

Julian and his wife, Helga, came to America from Peru and built a life here through hard work, opportunity and a genuine appreciation for the freedoms this country provides. Julian has spent years serving families through Geist Orthodontics, while their connection to BDC has grown well beyond the flag hanging in their home.

This summer, the Davilas showed up to support our inaugural Heroes & Healing Music Festival. That meant a lot to us.

We started BDC by making artwork from retired fire hose. Somewhere along the way, we realized we were also building a family — connecting first responders, businesses, hockey families, Hero Families and people like the Davilas who simply believe that service, freedom and one another are worth celebrating.

Four years ago, on August 19, 2022, Brotherhood Designs delivered Flag #27 to the Elwood Police Department in memory of Officer Noah Jacob Shahnavaz.

We thought we were bringing Chief Brizendine and his department a memorial flag.

Instead, that day helped define who Brotherhood would become.

Noah was only 24 when he was killed in the line of duty on July 31, 2022. He was a U.S. Army veteran, a Fishers High School graduate, an Elwood Police Officer — and most importantly, the son of Matt and Laurie Shahnavaz.

Chief Brizendine helped coordinate something that meant more to Scott and me than he probably realized: having Matt and Laurie there that morning to see and accept the piece created in honor of their son.

That moment showed us what Brotherhood could truly mean. Retired fire hose that had served one first-responder profession was given new purpose to honor a fallen hero from another. Different uniforms. Different professions. One Brotherhood of service and sacrifice.

Long before BDC became a nonprofit, Flag #27 helped plant the roots of our mission: honor our heroes, support their families, and preserve their stories so they are never forgotten.

To Matt, Laurie and the entire Shahnavaz family: thank you for allowing us to share that moment with you and for graciously accepting something created from our hearts to honor Noah. Your family's sacrifice will never be forgotten by ours.

QUALITY SERVICE DESERVES RECOGNITION.

At BDC, we continue to evolve the way we honor those who serve.

Every piece we build carries more than retired fire hose. It carries a department, a community, a family, a career — and a legacy story we've been entrusted to tell.

The last couple weeks have been a powerful reminder of that responsibility.

🇺🇸 #148 — Chief Barry Riddle Memorial | IFD Station 18

We delivered this Squad Series Memorial Piece honoring Chief Riddle's 39 years with the Indianapolis Fire Department and his volunteer service with Pittsboro Fire Department.

Chief Riddle passed as BDC was developing our Strategic Plan and securing the processes and procedures for our Memorial Fund beneficiaries and Legacy Pieces. His memorial became part of that evolution.

Stars cut from retired IFD and Pittsboro hose connect the departments he served, while a vial of his ashes is secured within the coupling — preserving a lifetime of service in a piece created for his legacy.

🇺🇸 #150 — Indianapolis Fire Department Headquarters

Engine Series #150 was delivered to IFD Headquarters, built from retired fire hose representing generations of service to Indianapolis.

🇺🇸 #151 & #152 — East Madison Fire Territory | Madison County

Two more pieces now reside in East Madison Fire Territory stations, built with EMFT retired hose.

Different stations. Different stories. The same commitment to service.

🇺🇸 #156 — Pittsfield Charter Township | Michigan

After seeing our work at Lucky Bastard Saloon in Nashville, TN, Dave Brewer of Vanston/O'Brien, Inc. commissioned #156 as a surprise gift to the Department of Public Safety — thanking the Township for its trust in his company and the men and women who risk their lives protecting others.

🇺🇸 YESTERDAY — #116 | University of Notre Dame Fire Department

Yesterday, BDC went to South Bend, IN to the University of Notre Dame to install the mounting cleat for a project nearly a year in the making.

#116, provided and sponsored by Johnson Controls, is being built with retired hose from the South Bend area-IN District 2.
(Congressman Rudy Yakym has a flag in Washington DC made with District 2 retired fire hose.)

We'll return September 19, ahead of Notre Dame vs. Michigan State, to unveil #116 where it will take its permanent place inside the NDFD.

This is Brotherhood.

We aren't simply making American flags from retired fire hose.

We are being entrusted to tell legacy stories.

Stories of firefighters, families, departments, communities and institutions whose service deserves to be remembered.

Those who serve prepare to be there on someone else's worst day.

That quality of service deserves recognition.

🇺🇸 ANNIVERSARY SPOTLIGHT | #20 & #21

Some anniversaries remind us just how far Brotherhood has come.

Four years ago, Anthony Busack took a chance on an idea we were still proving.

At a time when fewer than 25 Brotherhood flags existed, Anthony commissioned two — #20 for The Goddard School and #21 for his home.

The Goddard School on Brooks School Road has been part of the Fishers Indiana Government community for more than 20 years, helping shape young minds and prepare generations of kids for what comes next. Anthony continues that legacy today as its owner, building a respected business centered around education, families and community.

For Brotherhood, #20 and #21 will always represent something special: someone believing in us before there was much of a track record to believe in.

Anthony, thank you for taking that early chance on Brotherhood — and for the impact you and your team continue to make in Fishers.

Excited to be part of this event in a few weeks!

Heroes Defense will hold its annual 9/11 tribute gala on September 5 at the Mountain America Center in Idaho Falls, marking the 25th anniversary of the attacks. The event honors first responders, veterans, and their families with keynote speakers including Robert O'Neill and Ray Care.

**Some stories deserve their moment—even if we're a little late.**

As we've shared over the past couple of weeks, July was one of the busiest months in Brotherhood Designs Corporation 's history. Between Heroes & Healing, honoring Hero Families, and continuing our mission on a special Brotherhood trip to Pennsylvania, we're catching up on a few anniversary stories that deserve to be remembered.

Today we're reflecting on **Flag #75**.

Two years ago, we had the privilege of hanging this Squad Series flag in **Kathy Duffin's** home. While it began as Shaun Duffin's second Squad Series flag, it quickly became something even more meaningful—a piece he gifted to his mother and now represents family, pride, and the relationships that continue long after a flag leaves our shop.

One of the things we've learned over the years is that our flags don't truly belong to us. They become part of a family's home, their conversations, their memories, and the legacy they continue to build together.

Kathy has always reminded us that encouragement is one of the greatest gifts we can give another person. Whether through a kind word, a thoughtful conversation, or simply cheering others on, those quiet acts of support often have a bigger impact than we'll ever know.

That's exactly what Brotherhood Designs hopes our work can do.

To Kathy—and to the entire Duffin family—thank you for being part of our story and for allowing us to become a small part of yours.

We hope Flag #75 continues to serve as a reminder that legacy isn't just built through extraordinary moments. It's built through the people we love, the homes we create, and the encouragement we give to others every day.

Some stories deserve to be told—even if we're a little late.

July was one of the busiest and most meaningful months in Brotherhood Designs Corporation's history. Between preparing for Heroes & Healing, honoring Hero Families, and continuing our mission on a special Brotherhood trip to Pennsylvania for Corey’s Cruise , we're catching up on a few anniversary posts that deserve their own moment.

Today, we're reflecting on **Flag #109**.

One year ago, Ashley Werner quietly reached out to us with a simple hope—to surprise her husband, Lieutenant Matthew Werner of the JasperGov - Indiana (Jasper Fire Department), with something that truly reflected a lifetime of service.

Matthew never asked for recognition.

In fact, the idea began after he happened to see one of our retired fire hose flags online and simply said to Ashley, *"How cool would that be to have one with my badge number?"*

Ashley knew there was much more to the story.

She told us about a man who spent **20 years as a firefighter**, while also serving as a journeyman lineman—answering calls in the middle of the night, restoring power after devastating storms, volunteering for disaster relief, and quietly putting others before himself. She described a husband, father, and servant who had spent his entire life living the creed:

"You are your brother's keeper."

Those words define both the fire service and the brotherhood of linemen.

When we presented **Flag #109**, we believed we were honoring a remarkable career.

Months later, Matthew sent us a message that reminded us why BDC exists.

He shared that every time he looks at Flag #109 hanging in his family's sunroom, he feels **both pride and humility**. He told us that after twenty years of service, he never thought much about what he'd done until his family helped him realize that his career had mattered—not because of awards or recognition, but because of the lives he touched.

That is exactly why we tell these stories.

Legacy isn't measured by medals.

It isn't measured by headlines.

It's measured by the people whose lives are made better because someone quietly chose to serve.

Between preparing for the inaugural Heroes & Healing Music Festival, honoring Hero Families, and continuing our mission during a special Brotherhood trip to Pennsylvania, we're catching up on a few anniversary posts that simply deserve their moment.

Today we're celebrating **Flag #80**, delivered to Youarecurrent on **July 15, 2024**.

Two years ago, what started as a creative conversation with **Ben Weir** became one of the defining moments in the evolution of Brotherhood Designs. We were challenged to do something we'd never attempted before—preserve significant moments from Current Publishing's history by printing them directly onto retired fire hose.

That single project pushed us beyond our comfort zone.

The techniques we developed while creating Flag #80 became the foundation for future legacy pieces, including some of our most meaningful memorial flags and national showcase projects. Sometimes one idea changes everything.

Over the past two years, Current Publishing has continued to be more than a recipient of one of our flags—they've become a valued community partner who believes that local stories matter.

We also want to extend a sincere thank you to **Jessica Todd** and the entire Current Publishing team for helping share the story of our inaugural **Heroes & Healing Music Festival** this July. Your coverage helped introduce our mission to countless people throughout Hamilton County and reminded us why strong community journalism matters.
