The tradition of arbol de la vida sculptures is said to originate in Spanish Colonial Mexico, when the Church commissioned local artisans to create candelabras with biblical scenes as a way to assimilate the native people to the Catholic faith.

Fast forward to the 1920s, in the town of Izucar de Matamoros, Aurelio Flores began the tradition of making tree of life ceramic sculptures. These artworks would come to represent the fine craftsmanship and unique visual style that he, and later his son Francisco, brought to the Mexican folk art tradition.

Often given to newlyweds as symbols of fertility and abundance, they are now
highly collectible pieces in the overall tradition of Mexican ceramic art. This piece, adorned with twenty one skeleton musicians, with birds and flowers throughout, is a rare and exceptional representation of this timeless folk art tradition. And it is only available at Nuevo Santander Gallery.

"Blooming Lotus Flower" by Fany Mares, acrylic on canvas, 24" x 20".
Returning to one of the most symbolic of flowering plants, the lotus flower, Fany adds whimsy and movement to the floating beauty.

Though its symbolism varies depending on the culture and religions, it most commonly represents purity, rebirth, and overcoming adversity. Given that it blooms in often murky, swampy water, the lotus flower proves that beauty is possible in the darkest of places.

With "Flamingoessence", McAllen based artist Lisa Saenz gives us an explosion of color and pattern within the flamingo form. Painted in 2009, Lisa states this was the first painting done in what is her now signature visual style. Teasing out the multitude of shapes, colors, and patterns she incorporates is what makes "Flamingoessence" such a joy to perceive. "Pueblo" by John Franklin (1925-2010), 16" x 20", oil on canvas.

Known for his impressionistic paintings of Pueblo Indians and Pueblo life in southwest, John Franklin was a prolific artist who, during his active years, lived in Arizona, California, and Taos, New Mexico, the latter providing the inspiration for many of his paintings.

His skill with the brush and unique approach led him to be a successful artist in the region and provided him name recognition. This painting is one of two of his works' that are on display and available for purchase at Nuevo Santander Gallery.

For fans of Agapito Labios, Renteria, and Mexican folk art in general, this is another fine example of what people love about this once popular style of Mexican art, and the work Agapito Labios. A young girl with wide, round eyes wears a dress of an older traditional style, perfectly matching the rustic period kitchen with a traditional wood burning stove and details of Mexican tiles bringing us back to how a Mexican cocina would have looked over a hundred years ago. Horacio Renteria (1912 - 1972) was a beloved Mexican painter of a popular folk art style that came to prominence in the mid 20th century. His work, which mostly features children in traditional and often formal or elaborate dress, portrays an idealized past that is both charming and nostalgic. His paintings are sought after by collectors of Mexican artwork, in part for his vintage, old-world aesthetic and picturesque, idealized children. This painting is a fine example of his work and is in excellent condition.
