A repeated report of a woman feeling followed, two DWI arrests and a car that burst into flames were among the calls keeping Southold Town police busy last week.

Police responded to 69 reported incidents from Aug. 17 to 24, including a Cutchogue woman who contacted officers three times about a man she believes has been following her, a Fishers Island vehicle fire that left its owner with a burn injury and a felony vehicle alert that led police to seize a car wanted by an NYPD detective squad.

Nine years of studying, tasting and testing — and a North Fork first.

Mattituck’s Gabriella Macari has earned the prestigious Master of Wine title, widely considered one of the most difficult professional credentials in the wine world.

Macari was the only American among seven people to earn the title in the latest class — joining an elite group of just 427 active Masters of Wine worldwide.

And she hasn’t forgotten where it all started.

“I will always be an ambassador for New York wines!” Macari said.

A historic honor for Peconic Bay Medical Center.

Cheers erupted and confetti flew as PBMC received Magnet recognition — the nation’s highest honor for nursing excellence and quality patient care.

The Riverhead hospital is the first in the area to earn the prestigious designation, following a rigorous, multi-year review of its nursing practices, patient care and outcomes.

“This is the pinnacle of nursing excellence,” PBMC President Amy Loeb said. “You set a new standard of care for this community.”

New leadership for the Long Island Sound.

Nicole Tachiki has been named director of the Long Island Sound Partnership, taking the helm as the organization begins implementing a new 10-year plan focused on cleaner water, habitat restoration and coastal resilience.

For the North Fork, one major initiative is coming this fall: a new water-quality model designed to determine how much nutrient pollution needs to be reduced — and where to improve the Sound.

Finding a local farm? There’s an app for that — and a 12-year-old helped build it.

Cutchogue mother-and-son team Heather Spinelli and Luca created FarmScout, an app designed to connect people with farms, farm stands, farmers markets, vineyards and agricultural events.

What started as an idea last summer — inspired in part by Heather’s childhood memories of relying on a local farm during tough times — has grown into a nationwide platform with more than 11,000 listings and nearly 1,500 downloads.

And Luca? He started building the prototype when he was just 11.

All aboard for a weekend of railroad history!

The 22nd annual Riverhead Railroad Festival rolls into town Aug. 29-30, marking the Railroad Museum of Long Island’s 30th year in Riverhead.

Expect toy train layouts, live music, food, vendors, simulators and rides aboard a restored 1964-65 World’s Fair park train. Festivalgoers can even hop aboard the LIRR “Greenport Scoot” for a trip to the museum’s Greenport location.

“It’s a big amalgamation to celebrate everything railroad,” museum president Don Fisher said.

Voters gave local history a big vote of confidence.

Cutchogue-New Suffolk voters overwhelmingly approved a new $60,000 annual tax levy to support the Historical Council & Museums, passing the measure 102-12.

The funding — about $21.52 a year for the average taxable property — will help preserve historic buildings, maintain local collections and tackle major repairs, including several aging roofs.

“We’re thrilled that the community has chosen to support us,” executive director Mark MacNish said.
