Political newcomer Christopher Gallant cruised to victory Tuesday in the Democratic primary, setting up a November challenge against Republican incumbent Nick LaLota in New York’s 1st Congressional District.

As of late Tuesday night, Mr. Gallant, 36, received 12,002 votes, or 63%, to 7,046 votes, or 37%, for Lukas Ventouras, a 25-year-old law student from Northport, according to unofficial results from the Suffolk County Board of Elections.

That’s how billionaire Stefan Soloviev described himself in a New York Magazine profile — offering perhaps the clearest explanation yet of his vision for more than 1,000 acres of North Fork land.
With two major subdivision proposals moving through Southold Town review, his comments are likely to intensify a debate already dividing the community:

Six North Fork seniors from Mattituck-Cutchogue, Greenport and Southold high schools were honored among Suffolk County’s top student-athletes at the 26th annual Butch Dellecave Awards.

Named in honor of longtime educator, coach and official Gaetano “Butch” Dellecave, the award is presented annually through a partnership between the Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, the Butch Dellecave Foundation and Newsday.

Shelter Island’s annual 10K race drew hundreds of runners to the Rock on Saturday, June 20.

Conditions were favorable at race start with the temperature at 77 degrees and a breezy 14 mph wind, with blue skies, scattered clouds and the sun making now-and-then appearances in bright breaks.

A new Strawberry Queen was crowned, thousands packed Strawberry Fields and Geoffrey Esper defended his title in the World Strawberry Shortcake Eating Championship.

Mattituck High School senior Kate Meringer was named the 2026 Strawberry Queen Saturday at the 71st annual Mattituck Lions Club Strawberry Festival, one of the North Fork’s biggest summer traditions.
