As a young skater I always asked my mom, “Am I a figure skater yet?”. My teachers in school referred to me as “the ice skater”. I wanted to be known as “the figure skater.”
So my answer to this is…when you pass your first Judged Figure Skating test in the USFS system. That means you are no longer working through the Learn to Skate curriculum (where the coach passes you thru a level).
There are many ways to test in the USFS
Singles (freestyle jumps and spins)
Skating Skills (patterned turns and edges)
Ice Dance (patterned dances to music)
Figures (tracing various 8s)
Pairs (jumping, spinning and doing lifts with a partner)
Many of my skaters skate Synchro or Synchronized Skating which is a combination of 9-16 skaters performing edges, turns and making various shapes on the ice. It requires Skating Skills and Singles tests to be passed to determine your Synchro level.
