Support Doozers too!
This is a hard post to write, but we feel that we cannot stay silent any longer on what’s going on in Minneapolis, in Maine and elsewhere throughout the country.
We are horrified daily by the news regarding actions this administration has taken towards citizens & non-citizens alike.
We (Claire & DJ) started our family here in this community. We love Ishpeming and are happy to raise our 2 (soon to be 3) kids here. From their births at Bell to the first day of school at Birchview, we’ve had amazing experiences and met wonderful people who place importance on community.
We established roots for our business here, building our bakery inside the Gossard building, a place rich in history. We feel extremely lucky to have two awesome people working with us at Doozers and a large collection of individuals who have helped out in a variety of pinches we’ve had, often last minute.
The comfortable choice has been to keep our heads down and try and keep going, not saying anything for fear of ruffling feathers.
For many reasons, though, we cannot do that anymore.
We live in an area with so much pride for heritage and ancestry and roots - Finnish, Italian and more. People who came here from all over, often not speaking the language, poor, and seeking a better life and new opportunities. DJ’s father immigrated from Mexico and if you’ve talked with DJ for more than five minutes at a time, you probably already knew that. This community's history is inescapable. We are where we have been.
These differences should not cause fear and panic. Let alone division, violence and death. It seems clear to us the list of concerns claimed by this administration is not commensurate with the actions and policies they have employed.
We do not have money to spare. Let’s be real - after supporting our family, covering payroll, paying bills, and purchasing ingredients… we aren’t making that kinda dough.
We wish we could do more, and we will, if you’ll still have us.
We love you, our community. And we are forever grateful to be a part of your lives in some small way.
For those who are scared or unsure of what’s to come, just know that we see you and you are not alone.
There have been calls for a National Shutdown today, Jan. 30th. And while we don’t believe we can afford to shut down, we do believe we can participate by raising money.
Starting today and then for the foreseeable future, every Wednesday, the first day of the week we are open, $1 of every marked cookie sold at our shop will be donated to the National Immigrant Justice Center, another Legal Aid Charity or to a local charity that is helping those in the community who may not be able to help themselves.
Love, Doozers
