The Ada History Center - Ada Historical Society participated in the America 250 celebrations this year with their temporary exhibit, Yankee Doodle Joy: Expressions of Patriotism. We have had the pleasure of working with them on their last few annual temporary exhibits. This one was just as fun as the first! Over the years they have invested in a few re-usable pieces of exhibit hardware that we can use to install future exhibits too. It's a great value for small museums to have these types of pieces in their exhibit collection, and we worked to tailor those pieces to the needs of this museum and the space they have available for changing exhibits.

Here's a project from the end of 2024 that we didn't manage to post. Design was done by Project Arts & Ideas, we fabricated an installed it at the Boyne Heritage Center. The exhibit is focused around the history of fire fighting in Boyne City, and features an entry that has burned panels and moving theater lights to give the effect of fire. This is our third post in a series about how we built a replica marsh for the Eddy Discovery Center at the Waterloo Recreation Area.
Once the above ground formation was finished, we had to surface the water. While some marshes may have a still water surface, they aren’t usually glass-like. We used an epoxy product that mimics the texture of water when it sets. Openings in the acrylic surface for the lily pad stems were caulked shut to keep it from dripping down into the underwater area, and artificial duck w**d was applied before the epoxy set. It sets with a hard, non-tacky surface, so should this exhibit ever need to be opened and cleaned, the surface can just be wiped off.

After everything had a few days to rest and cure, the exhibit was fully inspected, touchups to paint and plant placement were made, and surfaces were thoroughly cleaned. The acrylic covers were installed and the exhibit was secured for delivery.

This is our second post in a series about how we built a replica marsh for the Eddy Discovery Center at the Waterloo Recreation Area.
Once everything under the water line was finished, we began assembling the water surface and above water ground formations. The acrylic water surface was secured, and the ground formation began. There are a snake and a turtle wrapped in parchment paper to protect them from the foam while the formations were being poured and formed. Fun fact: standard kitchen parchment paper does not stick to the expanding foam we use for this type of sculpture work, making it a great tool for guiding the foam while it expands and hardens.

Did you guess what the headless stems were for in the underwater setup? They were place holders for the lily pad stems that we planned to thread through the acrylic water surface!

Just like with the underwater habitat, once the foam was properly sculpted, plants were added and ground surface applied and painted. Stay tuned for our last post in the series, talking about the water surface!

We build a wide variety of exhibit components, including some scenic elements. Many people don’t know how these items are built, so we put together a short series of posts on how this might be done. We built this replica marsh for the Eddy Discovery Center at the Waterloo Recreation Area, run by the Michigan State Department of Natural Resources. The WRA is home to many different types of wildlife communities, but many visitors don’t get the opportunity to see them all or may only be able to see what is on the surface of them.

All the fishes, turtles, and the snake featured in this exhibit are replicas that were in previous exhibits at the Eddy Discovery Center. We repurposed them into this display. A virtual model was developed to be sure there was room for everyone in the exhibit and to show the client an approximation of the final piece.

Construction started with the display case, making sure the custom acrylic dome topper had a secure and proper fit. Next came the artistry, mounting the fishes and turtle, building the ground formation bit by bit, and finally adding in plants and proper surface and color. Note that there are stems in the ground that are missing their plants—can you guess what those will be? Stay tuned for our next post on development of the above ground surfaces!

This was an interesting project to work on for the Pentwater Historical Society. The exhibit structure is comprised of two display kiosks of our design that have a metal frame and is mounted on casters for easy movement. They are arranged to hold 6 pairs of panels that present information about several of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, who's names are used for several streets in downtown Pentwater. The frames are an investment as they can be easily reused for new exhibit content in the future. Contact us today to see what solutions we can provide for your exhibit needs!

As we continue to commemorate America's 250th year, we are delighted that the video touchscreen in our Veterans' exhibit is ready for action.

Spaces to Experiences LLC helped us build an interactive experience with information on those who have served from Ada. Phase 1 is complete which includes our veterans from the War of 1812, War with Mexico, Civil War, and Spanish-American War. Research is ongoing for further eras. Up next? WWI.

This project is possible in part because of a Michigan History Alliance grant from the Historical Society of Michigan. We're truly grateful.

Congratulations to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources on the grand reopening of the Gerald E. Eddy Discovery Center at the Waterloo Recreation Area in Chelsea, MI! We were honored to be your exhibit partner for this project over the last three years. It's been a long road, but the results are SO worth it! From the building renovations to all the new exhibits, this is such a great improvement to this visitor center. These photos are just a small glimpse of all the cool new things to see. We'll have some posts with more details coming in the future.
