Following our recent auditions, we’re excited to announce that bassoonist Jake Fowler has joined GSO as a core musician.

Originally from Greenville, South Carolina, Jake currently serves as third bassoon and contrabassoon with the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra and principal bassoon with the Johnson City Symphony. He has also performed with the Nashville Symphony, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Charlotte Symphony, Atlanta Ballet Orchestra, and New World Symphony.

Jake teaches bassoon and chamber music at the Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities in Greenville and studied at the Eastman School of Music for both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees.

For nearly 40 years, Theresa Eubanks Ireland was one of the Georgia Symphony Orchestra’s most dedicated supporters.

A respected educator and philanthropist, Theresa gave her time and leadership to the orchestra as treasurer and president of the Women’s Guild and as a member of the Board of Trustees. Her service earned her the Maestro Baton of Excellence in 2002.

Concertmaster Edward Eanes remembers the role she played in sustaining the organization:

“Theresa is largely responsible for the longevity of the Georgia Symphony Orchestra. There were many times that she was the angel who kept us going when we were between music directors.”

Theresa passed away in 2022, but her legacy continues. In 2026, her husband, Grady Ireland, and daughter, Heather Golden, established a fund to name the Concertmaster Chair in her honor in perpetuity.

We are grateful for Theresa’s decades of service and for her family’s commitment to carrying that legacy forward.

When the conductor steps up to the podium at American Tapestry on Oct. 10, they’ll be standing on a piece of Georgia Symphony Orchestra history.

This season, the GSO Conductor’s Podium will be named The Betty Shipman Bennett Conductor’s Podium, generously sponsored by Betty’s daughter, Barbara Bennett, in honor of her mother’s extraordinary legacy.

Betty Shipman Bennett led the organization for more than three decades. During her tenure, the orchestra grew and evolved through the Marietta Symphony Orchestra and Cobb Symphony Orchestra eras, helping lay the foundation for the Georgia Symphony Orchestra we know today.

Barbara and her husband, Steve Walag, will travel from Riverside, California, to join us for the Oct. 10 season opener as we recognize this meaningful tribute.

Barbara is also establishing the WC Cran Bennett Operations Fund and the annual Cran Bennett Volunteer Appreciation Award, extending her family’s support beyond the stage to the people and work that sustain the orchestra.

It feels especially fitting to recognize this legacy during American Tapestry, a concert that celebrates the spirit, energy, and complexity of America through music that is bold, inspiring, and deeply human.

From the streets of 1950s New York to the porches and rooftops of 2020, two works on our American Tapestry program tell very different stories about conflict, community, and resilience.

Music Director and Conductor Tim Verville shares more about Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story and Valerie Coleman’s Seven O’Clock Shout, a work inspired by the nightly celebrations honoring frontline workers during the early days of the pandemic.

There’s also something unusual you’ll hear during Seven O’Clock Shout that rarely happens in orchestral music. Tim is saving that surprise for the Maestro Talk at 6:30 p.m. — a 30-minute pre-concert talk about the stories behind the music and what to listen for, free for all ticket holders.
