CineMarfa

CineMarfa 501c3 organization dedicated to film arts in Marfa, Texas
NEXT EDITION: FEBRUARY 16, 2026

CineMarfa was founded in March of 2011 by a group of artists, filmmakers, and film lovers in order to promote the art and culture of film and filmmaking in Marfa. Amongst the many vibrant cultural organizations that call Marfa home, CineMarfa has taken up the mission to focus exclusively on film and video. All of the programs offered by CineMarfa are free of charge, and our organization is run by

volunteers. Since 2011, the CineMarfa film festival has distinguished itself from other film festivals by emphasizing the intersection between film and visual art. For five days each May, we screen around 20 films in the Crowley Theater and other spaces around town. The CineMarfa film festival is dedicated to bringing rare, forgotten, or difficult-to-see films โ€“ including films that have been banned or censored โ€“ to light in far West Texas. Our focus is on films made by visual artists, as well as rarely screened archival, experimental, documentary, and narrative films. We also feature work by Texas artists, filmmakers, and other Texan film-related cultural producers, including some that call Marfa home. All of the screenings are free but reservations are strongly recommended.

The screening engages in a dialogue between cinema, literature and the natural sciences, delving into ideas brought to light by the exhibition.

"Robert Irwin: A Desert of Pure Feeling," directed by Jennifer Lane, is now streaming on Amazon.com and Apple TV, and available to view in select theaters.

The film explores life and career of experimental artist Robert Irwin, whose installations have radically expanded the possibilities of what art can be.

Irwin began as a painter in LAโ€™s โ€œCool Schoolโ€ scene, before developing a new way of working that made perception itself the subject. Irwinโ€™s notable works include the Central Garden at the Getty Center in LA and "untitled (dawn to dusk)" in Marfa, Texas.

ROBERT IRWIN: A DESERT OF PURE FEELING by Jennifer Lane
Sunday, June 18, 2023 / 7:00 PM at the Crowley Theater

"Renowned experimental artist, Robert Irwin, explores human perception in a world that has expanded the presence of technology. Irwinโ€™s unorthodox style led to a long career and life, including periods as a gambler and a cherished teacher. Through his art, Irwin questions consumerism, technology, and human nature. The film spans Irwinโ€™s early work experimenting with biofeedback, to his immersive minimalist masterpiece in Marfa, Texas, which is a radical ode to the evanescent elements of light and space. NEURO OSMOSIS by David Fenster

๐ŸŽฌWorld Premiere๐ŸŽฌ

Neuro Osmosis, a new film by American filmmaker David Fenster, explores the visual relationship between the current paintings of artist Nick Terry, and the electron microscopy imagery created several decades ago by his late father, renowned Neuropathologist, Dr. Robert D. Terry. How art, science, zen philosophy, and familial relations can influence our daily lives, work and pursuits, are addressed in this personal film.

KEYBOARD FANTASIES by Posy Dixon

Saturday June 17th / 8PM at the Crowley Theater

As a sci-fi obsessed woman living in near isolation, Beverly Glenn-Copeland wrote and self-released Keyboard Fantasies in Huntsville, Ontario back in 1986. Recorded in an Atari-powered home-studio, the cassette featured seven tracks of a curious folk-electronica hybrid, a sound realised far before its time.

Three decades on, the musician โ€“ now Glenn Copeland โ€“ began to receive emails from people across the world, thanking him for the music theyโ€™d recently discovered. Courtesy of a rare-record collector in Japan, a reissue of Keyboard Fantasies and subsequent plays by Four Tet, Caribou and more, the music had finally found its audience two generations down the line.

Keyboard Fantasies sees the Glenn Copeland commit his life and music to screen for the first time - an intimate coming of age story spinning pain and the suffering of prejudice into rhythm, hope and joy.

Half aural-visual history, half DIY tour-video, the film provides a vehicle for our newly appointed q***r elder to connect with youth across the globe. A timely lullaby to soothe those souls struggling to make sense of the world.

DAVID HAMMONS: THE MELT GOES ON FOREVER by Harold Crooks & Judd Tully

Saturday June 17th / 5PM at the Crowley Theater

The Melt Goes On Forever chronicles the singular career of the elusive African-American art star David Hammons from Watts rebellion era โ€™60s L.A. to global art world prominence today. Hammonsโ€™ category-defying practice โ€“ rooted in a deep critique of American society and the elite art world โ€“ is in the words of one art critic โ€œan invitation to confront the fissures between racesโ€ as the artist seeks to go beyond the dominant culture and his own to a new one for the 21st century.

Featuring eminent artists, curators and critics, a rich trove of archival footage, animation, and an evocative soundscape, The Melt is a record of the work of an artist who constantly defies the establishment and remains subversive at every turn.
