It's World Poetry Day! This UNESCO celebration day is meant to highlight linguistic diversity through poetic expression. Germany is often referred to as the "land of poets and thinkers". And indeed, Germany is no stranger to poets, with famous names including Friedrich Schiller, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Hermann Hesse and Heinrich Heine, among countless others.

Do you have a favorite German poem or poet?

A simple but famous German poem by Goethe is called the "Wanderer's Nachtlied" (Wanderer's Nightsong), which has two parts. The poem was supposedly written on the wall of a small mountaintop lodge (pictured), where Goethe spent a night. Can you try reading it in German?

We at Shakespeare’s Globe are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Her Majesty The Queen.

During her extraordinary and historic reign, we were honoured to have her officially open the Globe Theatre on 12 June 1997.

She was accompanied by Prince Philip, who served as our Royal Patron for over 40 years.

A remarkable and devoted Queen, she will be greatly missed worldwide.

Our deepest condolences and piercing love and appreciation for all Her Majesty The Queen has done in Love and Duty Sempre ∞❤️∞

Following further evaluation this morning, The Queen’s doctors are concerned for Her Majesty’s health and have recommended she remain under medical supervision. The Queen remains comfortable and at Balmoral.
