Harvey by Mary Chase opens at Marblehead Little Theatre on April 10th. In the meantime, let's to know our cast a little better.
Up first is Niko King-Mahan who plays Myrtle Mae Simmons:
What drew you to this production?
I adore working with MLT, and upon seeing the auditions posted, I did some reading of the play. I really enjoy Mary Chases comedy, as itâs timeless and clever. I also have a running joke with my mother about chasing white rabbits, and that also drew me to the piece. You could say Harvey orchestrated the whole thing!
Favorite theatre memory?
Being mistaken for an Amish woman by bar goers during the Crucible, when I was going around the back of the building. It makes me laugh.
Favorite line in the show?
Oh, mother! People get hit by trucks every day. Why canât something like that happen to Uncle Elwood?
What do you hope audiences take away from this show?
I hope they take away that just because someone seems different, it doesnât mean theyâre bad. Elwood is debatably the best person in the show, even if he is the strangest one as well. Sometimes the best people are the strangest.
The show tackles themes of questioning reality and trust in the people around you. What is a situation in which you felt misunderstood or that people didn't understand your point of view?
As someone who struggles with social cues generally, I often worry about my words being misunderstood, especially with people my own age. I often like to point out things I like about a person, like their hair, or something clever they did. Sometimes people will take those compliments as sarcastic when theyâre not. I think Elwood really resonates with me for that reasonâ sometimes people who mean well can be taken as something different than that.
