Do you have a creative daughter who wants to get messy this summer and reallllly explore her visions? “Summer Art Camp” for Girls Art In Action (ages 8-18, one room school house style) has officially been drawn up and planned out - it will be an immersive week where our girls will get to experience two 2-D projects and two 3-D projects, and gain experience with utilizing substantial scale with a 4 x 4 foot “mural” ❤️

Twice a month on Thursday night, Girls Art in Action meets in my studio. This week, we focused on how different types of marks make you feel different in your body and your mind. We started big — broad strokes, bold colors, the whole arm moving. Then we got quiet. More precise. More intentional. I never tell them what the project is supposed to mean. I just ask them how it feels. They always know.”

We built the neighbors-and neighborhood!-of our dreams❤️🌎 Using sticks gathered from my backyard, yarn and textiles in every color, googly eyes and found objects, our Girls Art In Action group created figures that are individually unique. Perhaps they are representations of themselves, or something entirely imaginary. No to are alike.
When we placed them together in front of our little village backdrop, something happened when different things are placed alongside each other with intention: a community appeared! This is what villages are built from. Not uniformity. Not agreement on everything. But the willingness to show up, take up space, and stand next to someone whose yarn is a completely different color than yours. Everyone belongs in the village!

Trust the Process
Last week, the girls didn’t know what they were making until it revealed itself.
They followed steps without seeing the destination. They made marks that looked like chaos before they became something beautiful. They learned that the mess is part of the process — not a mistake to fix, but a layer to build on.
This is true of art. It’s also true of growing up.
The next time they are in the middle of something hard and uncertain and not yet finished — I hope they will remember this project, and that they will remember that they trusted the process once, and something wonderful appeared.

This week at Girls Art in Action, our group discovered folk art. For thousands of years, ordinary people have made extraordinary things. No galleries. No formal training.
