Historic Visual Spotlight: Charles Alston’s Black Santa (1943)
During World War II, Harlem Renaissance artist Charles Henry Alston was commissioned by the U.S. Office of War Information to create uplifting imagery for Black newspapers. Included in this series was a striking Black Santa illustration, one of the first ever published—centered in the fight for representation amid wartime propaganda efforts.
