Peony season is almost here, and I have a vision in my head for a class of 2027 Senior, who loves flowers, summer evenings, and images that feel a little magical.

The blooms won’t last long, and neither will the opportunity to photograph among them.

if you’re already picturing yourself there too, send me a DM.

For nearly two weeks, I've been working through an unexpected challenge here on the farm. What started as a frustration ended up changing my perspective on a lot more than I expected, becoming a lesson in gratitude, community, and connection.

I'd love to share that story with you.

After a power surge left our Minnesota farm without internet for weeks, I was reminded of the important connections that quietly support life and business.

Thirty years ago, I boarded my very first airplane on my way to Norway. I had no idea then how much that journey would shape my life, my faith, my photography, and my understanding of just how big the world could be.

Yesterday, surrounded by lefse, krumkake, fellowship, and Norwegian heritage at a little country church in southern Minnesota, all of those memories came rushing back.

Thirty years after traveling to Norway with Bethany Lutheran College, I reflect on faith, photography, heritage, and a journey that changed my life.

This Mother’s Day carried both grief and gratitude.

Between missing my mom, celebrating Rylee’s graduation, and realizing our family will soon change again through marriage, I found myself reflecting on how quickly life moves and why photographs matter so much.

I shared those reflections in my newest blog post here:

Mother’s Day reflections on family, loss, legacy, and preserving meaningful moments through authentic family photography and heirloom imagery.

My family only had professional photos taken twice, so this is one of only two photographs where all of us are together, and not behind a birthday cake.

My kids often wonder why I’m so adamant about photos of us together. There’s a long list of reasons, but part of it is because people change… and part of it is because we never really know how long we’ll have each other.

My senior photographer came out to our farm and photographed us by the creek. It was about this time of year, when spring was finally starting to show itself again on the farm. At the time, it didn’t feel monumental or life-changing. It was simply one rare moment where we all stopped long enough to be together in front of the camera.

None of us knew Dad would be in Heaven only a few months later.

Now this photograph means everything.

This is exactly why I include spring family photos with every full Senior Experience. As the years go on, it only becomes harder to gather everyone together before life changes in a major way. Kids grow up. Families change. Time moves faster than we think it will.

So often, we convince ourselves we’re too busy to stop and take the photo. There’s always something else demanding our attention, and we assume there will be another chance later. But the photographs we almost don’t take often become the ones we treasure most.

And yes… these photos also give us the opportunity to lovingly question our hairstyle and clothing choices years later. In full honesty, I planned this entire outfit around my seafoam green cowboy boots that don’t even show in this final image anyway.

This is what happens when portraits become more than just pictures… when they become a full experience.

Ireland was unforgettable. Not just for the images, but for the moments in between-the connection, the adventure, the feeling of being fully in it.

Greece is where the story unfolds next, and is now open to adventurers of all ages.

Time is running out, but if this feels like your kind of story, I’d love to share more about what it could look like for you.
