Another fun thing I’ve been doing this summer is simple graduation gifts! Sometimes, the most special thing you can give someone is their own name. Ever thought about the power of naming? God gave Adam the task to name all of the animals. Jesus has been given “the Name that is above every other name.” What’s in a name? A name is important!
•
My mother-in-law has been giving these out in lieu of manufactured graduation gifts this year, and she says people have been loving them! It was so unexpected for something so simple, but she always includes an encouraging note on the back too, which, being a words of affirmation person myself, is so significant. It’s been sweet to hear the positive feedback. If this sounds like something you’d like to do next year, feel free to borrow the idea! (And I f you need someone to doodle for you, I’d love to help out!)

“You are my Sunshine” 🌞💙 My mom used to sing this to my brother when we were growing up (get it...”son-shine” 😂), and now, I sing it to my little boy!

I’m thinking this one is meant to go to someone who wants to remind a dear person in their life how brightly they shine. God’s blessings come so often through specific people. I feel like the luckiest person that I can name multiple people who are my “sunshine folks.” Who are some of yours?

“Joy” 💙 So fun painting this one. And it’s ready for a new home too!

One thing I’m learning as we pursue the Lord and His plans regarding adoption is that joy is not optional. If we’re going to live life in a way that people want what we have, then we’ve got to shine with something different! The paradox of it all is that we can’t cultivate this sort of thing by our own strength. Only with the help of God, and the Spirit of Jesus living inside of us, can we be truly happy people. And happiness and joy don’t have to be mutually exclusive. To say you’re deep down joyful but not really happy (evidenced by the lack of lift to your face) seems to me the deepest contradiction! As I’m learning how to parent Atticus, I see my own willfulness in his seven-month-old self—if he’s not happy (or joyful), everybody knows it! And God who sees everything sees the tiny temper tantrum I’m throwing in my heart when I’m “deep down joyful” but pouting on the outside. A tiny sermon, but it was on my heart, and I hope whoever needed to hear it did! Including myself 😉
