This is an update. The 2026 Great Lakes Environmental Festival (GLEF) is being moved to a new date. More details will be shared in the future. The change is intended to connect with younger people and get them involved. We will be making more information available once we are able to complete research regarding this intended change. We hope that everyone who has supported the previous GLEF events will continue to be interested and supportive of our mission. Thank you.

The Great Lakes Environmental Festival (GLEF) seeks to create common ground. Common ground in environmental activism lies in shared values like preserving nature's beauty, ensuring human survival, future generations' well-being, and recognizing our interconnectedness with the Earth, bridging divides through focusing on health, community, and tangible benefits, rather than polarized political terms, to build broad coalitions for collective action against environmental crises. It moves beyond narrow interests to shared experiences, connecting labor with climate justice, and highlighting how environmental problems disproportionately affect vulnerable communities.
• Shared Values: Preserving nature's beauty, ensuring human survival, and the well-being of future generations.
• Interconnectedness: Recognizing our link with the Earth and the interdependence of environmental and social dimensions.
• Health and Community: Bridging divides through a focus on human health, community benefits, and tangible outcomes.
• Social and Climate Justice: Moving beyond narrow interests to address how environmental problems disproportionately affect vulnerable communities and connecting labor with climate justice.
• Collective Action: Building broad coalitions for collective action against environmental crises.

The 2026 Great Lakes Environmental Festival is scheduled for June 5, 2026. The Vision of this organization is to "Improve the environment we all share."
The Mission is to "Provide awareness which leads to action by people to better manage the environment".

Established in 2008, the Great Lakes Environmental Festival (GLEF) purpose is to promote community activities, media, and displays to involve the public, especially students and educators in environmental stewardship. The festival is expected to inspire other people to think about ecology and the value of natural resources of the Great Lakes region. Join us at the 2026 GLEF.

The theme is expected to emphasize climate resilience and community empowerment. These elements focus on sustainable practices and equitable solutions for underrepresented communities most impacted by environmental degradation. The global environmental movement began in 1970.

In 2026 Great Lakes Environmental Festival we are especially focusing on: Gen X (1965 - 1980)
Gen X, or those born from 1965 to 1980, grew up with punk rock, hip-hop and grunge. Some key historical moments that shaped Gen X include the end of the Cold War and the rise of laissez-faire economics under Ronald Reagan's presidency. Millennials (1981 - 1996)
Gen Y, better known as millennials, were born from 1981 to 1996. The generation’s name originates from the fact that the oldest members were reaching adulthood around the turn of the millennium.
The millennial generation is largely known for having faced significant economic hardship throughout its lifetime, dealing with both the Great Recession in the late 2000s and the 2020 recession due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Gen Z (1997 - 2012)
Gen Z was born between 1997 and 2012 and is considered the first generation to have largely grown up using the internet, modern technology and social media. Members of Gen Z are sometimes known as zoomers.
