The New York Guitar Festival brought a world of guitar music to Bryant Park. Raphaël Feuillâtre brought the elegance and virtuosity of classical guitar, Fareed Haque & Goran Ivanovic crossed borders and traditions in a remarkable global fusion duo, and The Messthetics, joined by special guest Marc Ribot, closed things out with their explosive collision of punk and jazz. . . with additional unforgettable performances along the way by Ziggy & Miles, Gabriele Leite, Pierre Bensusan and Gyan Riley. Two beautiful summer nights, six distinctly different performances, terrific crowds, and a reminder of just how much ground six strings can cover. The New York Guitar Festival continues Saturday evening, August 15 at 7pm, with “The Misbehaving Guitar,” a concert that features musicians who color outside the lines.  It promises to be a wild ride with The Messthetics offering their fusion of guitarist Anthony Pirog’s avant-jazz with the rhythm section of the punk band Fugazi, with special guest Marc Ribot; Pierre Bensusan playing open-tuning explorations of Celtic, North African, jazz, and electronics; and Gyan Riley’s cosmic mix of psychedelia, minimalism, and contemporary classical music.

The New York Guitar Festival begins on Friday evening, August 14 at 7pm, with “A Carnival Of Classical Guitar.” The free concert in Bryant Park features star guitarist Raphaël Feuillâtre will play some of the core pieces of the classical guitar repertoire, but the concert will expand to include Argentine tango from the duo Ziggy & Miles, and the Balkan-South Asian-Latin fusion of Goran Ivanovic & Fareed Haque.  Of course, no carnival is complete without a trip to Brazil, so Gabriele Leite will play a set of Brazilian favorites.

Gabriele Leite performs at the New York Guitar Festival, Friday August 14th as part of a FREE Bryant Park concert at 7pm. The program, called A Carnival Of Classical Guitar, will also feature the Australian classical guitar duo Ziggy & Miles, the Balkan-South Asian-Latin fusion of Goran Ivanovic & Fareed Haque, and Deutsche Grammophon recording artist, Raphaël Feuillâtre. Gabriele Leite is a Brazilian guitarist now based in New York.  She represents the next generation of great Brazilian musicians, and champions the extraordinary sonic range of her homeland, both the classical compositions and the classic works of MPB, or Brazilian Popular Music.

Raphaël Feuillâtre performs at the New York Guitar Festival, Friday August 14th as part of a FREE Bryant Park concert at 7pm. The program, A Carnival Of Classical Guitar, will also feature the Australian classical guitar duo Ziggy & Miles, the Balkan-South Asian-Latin fusion of Goran Ivanovic & Fareed Haque, and Gabriele Leite who will focus on the  guitar traditions of her native Brazil. Raphaël Feuillâtre was born in Djibouti, on the Horn of Africa, raised in France, and has won major guitar competitions in Spain, Portugal, and the USA.  He now records for the famed German label Deutsche Grammophon. His globetrotting career is reflected in his repertoire, which goes from Bach to contemporary guitarists like Sergio Assad and Roland Dyens.

Pierre Bensusan performs at the New York Guitar Festival, Saturday August 15th as part of a FREE Bryant Park concert at 7pm called The Misbehaving Guitar. Also on the program will the Messthetics offering their fusion of guitarist Anthony Pirog’s avant-jazz with the rhythm section of the punk band Fugazi, with special guest Marc Ribot; Gyan Riley will bring his cosmic mix of psychedelia, minimalism, and contemporary classical music.

Pierre Bensusan is an Algerian-born French guitarist who first came to attention 40 years ago with his own interpretations of Celtic music, with occasional forays into North African and other forms of global music. He’s since added improvisation, vocalise, and electronic effects to create his own sonic world. But he still plays guitar exclusively in the open tuning system known as DADGAD.
