Some reflections feel bigger than a Monday post.
This week’s Barbie-ism #49 — “When the Flag Passes By” was written after reading Rodd’s next A Corner of INsights column before it goes to print.
And this one stayed with me.
It begins with a simple image: a flag passing by, a child watching the adults grow quiet, a veteran saluting, a hand placed over a heart.
But beneath that moment is a much deeper question:
What kind of America are we preparing the next generation to inherit?
Not just politically.
Not just historically.
But personally.
Are we teaching them how to build?
How to serve?
How to work with dignity?
How to stay connected even when we disagree?
How to believe their hometown still has a future?
Because patriotism is not pretending everything is perfect.
It is loving something enough to help make it better.
This week’s Barbie-ism reflects on rural America, legacy, the next 250 years, and the young people who will one day carry forward whatever we build — or fail to build — today.

That's one of the fascinating ideas I explored with Bryan Anderson — Bryan the Real Estate Guy — on INsights & Straight Talk.

What if someone in Mangum has been waiting for five simple words?

“Would you show us how?”

A retired machinist. A quilter. A teenager curious about robotics. A newcomer looking for work.

Our neighbors carry skills, stories, and ideas that deserve a place in the conversation about our future.

Recently, a young wife and her husband visited my INsights & Straight Talk studio on the top floor of the Mangum City Library. She wanted to discuss a show about a quilting club that has been part of Mangum for generations.

That visit belongs in the same conversation as a school workshop, engineering design, and teaching our children to use computers and AI thoughtfully. Each gives people a chance to learn from one another—and discover what they can contribute.

Years ago, as Southern California Section President of the Society of Plastics Engineers, I worked with junior colleges, colleges, high schools, machinery suppliers, and educators to help build engineering design centers.

I would love to explore what those experiences, combined with the knowledge already here, could help make possible for Mangum and Greer County.

What if the foods you’ve been told are “healthy” aren’t actually the right foods for your body?

On this episode of INsights & Straight Talk, Rodd Duff welcomes Jaguang Sunim, a Zen Buddhist nun, meditation teacher, and longtime practitioner of traditional Korean approaches to nutrition and wellbeing, for a fascinating conversation about the connection between food, physical health, emotional balance, and spiritual practice.

Jaguang’s journey is anything but ordinary.

In the 1980s, she spent eight years training in a Zen Buddhist monastery in South Korea. She later studied and worked with a Korean Buddhist monk who introduced her to traditional practices including Five Element Sasang Constitutional Medicine and Sundo, a Korean Taoist breathing practice.

At the center of our conversation is a provocative idea:

“Eating healthy” may not mean the same thing for every person.

Five Element Sasang Constitutional Medicine approaches nutrition through the individual. Jaguang will explain how this traditional Korean system looks at a person's constitution and patterns of internal balance to consider which foods may be supportive—and which may not be ideal for that particular individual.

That raises some fascinating questions.

Why can two people eat exactly the same “healthy” diet and experience completely different results?

How closely are nutrition, digestion, energy and emotional wellbeing connected?

And could addressing physical discomfort make it easier for someone to focus on meditation and spiritual practice?

Jaguang brings more than three decades of experience working with these ideas and has provided nutritional consultations to people around the world.

But this conversation goes far beyond what's on our plates.

We'll explore what true Zen practice means to Jaguang after decades devoted to it, what she learned during eight years of monastery training, and how the relationship between body and mind can influence our ability to become quiet, present and aware.

We'll also discuss her years operating Zen centers in Seattle and Berkeley, her eventual return to her native Canada, and what ancient traditions may still have to teach people navigating a very modern world.

This isn't a conversation telling you what to eat.

It's a conversation asking whether we understand our own bodies nearly as well as we think we do.

Can food become more than fuel? Can greater awareness of the body support greater awareness of the mind? And what happens when nutrition, self-understanding and spiritual practice all meet at the same table?

STOP TELLING OUR KIDS TO DREAM BIG IF WE WON'T GIVE THEM THE TOOLS.

I've been thinking a lot about the future of Mangum and Greer County.

After attending the Town Hall at The Outside Inn, I came home talking about technology, infrastructure, advanced manufacturing and what new opportunities could someday mean for Southwest Oklahoma.

Producer Barbie listened.

Then, in Monday's Barbie-ism, "Make Room for the Child Who Wonders," she brought the conversation back to something that matters even more.

Our children.

The kid who loves taking things apart.

The girl who wants to know how machines work.

The teenager who struggles in a traditional classroom but might be brilliant with a wrench, a welder or a computer.

The young person who hasn't yet discovered what they're capable of.

And that got me thinking.

WHAT IF WE BUILT THE MACHINE SHOP BEFORE THE JOBS CAME?

Not because some company promised to come to Mangum.

Not because a proposed nuclear project is guaranteed.

It isn't.

But because our kids deserve opportunities to develop real skills regardless of what happens with any single project.

Imagine a technical training program connecting Mangum schools, Oklahoma CareerTech, local businesses and experienced tradespeople.

Students learning:

🔧 Machining and precision measurement

⚙️ Welding and industrial maintenance

💻 Computer-aided design and CNC programming

🤖 Robotics and automation

🧠 Artificial intelligence and practical problem-solving

Now imagine putting a retired machinist with 40 years of experience beside a 16-year-old who understands technology that didn't exist when that machinist started working.

Let them teach each other.

I spent roughly 30 years around industrial machinery.

And here's something I know:

The wrench didn't become worthless when computers arrived.

Computers aren't becoming worthless because AI arrived.

The person who understands how to bring those tools together may have extraordinary opportunities.

But somebody has to teach them.

Somebody has to provide the equipment.

Somebody has to open the door.

And somebody has to believe a kid from Mangum, Oklahoma, deserves access to the same possibilities as a kid growing up near a major technology center.

That's what this week's Friday Mic Drop is about.

It's also the heart of my A Corner of INsights column, "What If We Built the Shop Before the Jobs Came?", in the Friday, October 2 edition of the Mangum Star-News.

This isn't about pretending a new training program would be easy.

It takes planning.

Money.

Equipment.

Qualified instructors.

Safety.

Partnerships.

And a community willing to sit down and figure out what's possible.

But here's my question:

IF WE DON'T START THE CONVERSATION, WHO WILL?

I don't want our young people growing up believing their only path to a meaningful technical career begins with leaving Greer County.

Some will leave. Some will return. Some will build their futures elsewhere.

That's their choice.

But leaving home shouldn't be the price of discovering what you're capable of.

And this isn't only about the kids.

It's about our experienced tradespeople having an opportunity to pass along knowledge that took decades to earn.

It's about local employers helping shape useful training.

It's about educators identifying potential that doesn't always show up on a report card.

It's about preparing Mangum for an economy where AI, robotics and advanced technology are becoming part of everyday work.

And it's about something I've believed for a long time:

Economic development doesn't begin with a building.

It begins with people.

So here's my challenge to Mangum and Greer County.

If you're a machinist, welder, electrician, engineer, technician, educator or business owner, think about what you could teach.

If you're a parent, ask your child what they'd like to learn to build.

If you're a student, don't be afraid to ask questions.

And if you're part of a school, business or community organization, let's explore what it would take to create opportunities together.

Because the future isn't waiting for us.

SO WHY THE HELL SHOULD WE WAIT TO PREPARE OUR KIDS FOR IT?

Stop telling them to dream big while handing them an empty toolbox.

BUILD THE SHOP.

TEACH THE SKILLS.

OPEN THE DOOR.

And when that curious kid walks in, let's be ready to say:

"Come on in. Let's find out what you can do."

🇺🇸 WHAT IF WE BUILT THE SHOP BEFORE THE JOBS CAME?
Before the company announcement.
Before the ribbon cutting.
Before someone from somewhere else tells us opportunity has arrived.
What if we started building opportunity ourselves?
This week’s 🌿 Poems & Pages — “BUILD THE ROOM” came from a question I haven’t been able to shake:
What are we going to teach our children to do next?
Imagine a room in a Mangum school.
A lathe.
A welding booth.
A workbench.
Computers.
Robotics.
Digital design.
Artificial intelligence.
And standing in the middle of it all...
our kids.
Now imagine something even more powerful.
An experienced machinist standing beside a teenager.
One has fifty years of knowledge in his hands.
The other understands technology the older generation never had.
One says:
“Listen to that bearing.”
The other says:
“Look at this data.”
And somewhere between the sound and the screen...
🇺🇸 America happens.
Not old versus new.
Not yesterday fighting tomorrow.
Two generations standing at the same workbench solving the same problem.
That’s the America I still believe in.
The America that builds.
Repairs.
Invents.
Teaches.
Learns.
Gets something wrong and tries again.
The America where a kid who never thought they were “good at school” discovers that intelligence can live in their fingertips, their curiosity, their spatial reasoning and their ability to look at something broken and see what it could become.
And the girl who's been taking things apart since she was six?
Give her the safety glasses.
Let her weld.
Let her program the machine.
Let her design.
Let her fail.
Let her solve it.
And don't be surprised if one day she owns the company.
Friday, October 2, my next A Corner of INsights is scheduled to go to print in the Mangum Star-News:
“What If We Built the Shop Before the Jobs Came?”
But this isn't really a story about machines.
It's about our children.
It's about whether rural communities have to wait for opportunity—or whether we can begin preparing young people to create it.
A company may come someday.
It may not.
But there is a child growing up in Greer County right now wondering how things work.
We don't have to wait to believe in that child.
Find the room.
Find the teachers.
Find the retired machinists, welders, electricians, mechanics, farmers, engineers and tradespeople carrying decades of knowledge.
Bring in the technology.
Bring in robotics.
Bring in AI.
Bring in the questions.
Especially the questions.
Then let generations teach each other.
Because someday nobody may remember who suggested the first machine.
Nobody may remember who attended the meeting.
Nobody may remember who found the money or swept the floor after the first class.
Good.
Legacy doesn't need our names.
It needs somewhere to go.
Maybe fifty years from now, an old photograph will hang unnoticed on the wall while another generation works beneath it.
A machine will still be humming.
A teacher will still be leaning over a student's shoulder.
An older hand will still be guiding a younger one.
And some kid will carry the first thing they ever made toward the door with a look on their face that says:
“I did this.”
And somebody will answer:
“Yes, you did.”
Friends, that is more than workforce development.
That's confidence.
That's dignity.
That's community.
That's one generation opening a door for the next.
And to me...
🇺🇸 THAT IS THE AMERICAN SPIRIT.
America's greatest resource has never been only what we can pull from the ground or manufacture inside a building.
It is the human being standing beside us saying:
“I wonder if I could build that.”
And another human being answering:
“Let's find out.”

What separates an athlete who gets faster from one who simply trains harder?

And how much of athletic performance comes down to strength and conditioning—and how much comes down to understanding how the human body actually moves?

Rodd Duff welcomes Dr. Amber Murphy, CEO of CompuSport, sports biomechanics expert, exercise scientist, and author of The Science of Speed, for a fascinating conversation about the science behind speed, movement, performance and injury prevention.

Dr. Murphy brings more than 20 years of experience working with athletes, from developing competitors to elite performers. Her background includes work with USA Track & Field, USA Bobsled and IMG, along with athletes and coaches across track and field, football, soccer, rugby, running and winter sports.

But this conversation isn't just for elite athletes.

It's for parents watching their children compete. It's for coaches trying to develop athletes without breaking them down. It's for weekend warriors wondering why their bodies don't respond the way they once did.

WHAT IF WE BUILT THE SHOP BEFORE THE JOBS CAME?
Friends, this week Rodd went to a town hall expecting to think about a possible development project.
He came home thinking about our kids.
And after reading his next A Corner of INsights, I couldn't stop thinking about them either.
Imagine walking into a school and seeing a teenager learning to run a lathe.
Another learning to weld.
A girl working with robotics.
A student designing something on a computer before turning that idea into something they can actually hold in their hands.
And beside them?
Maybe a retired machinist.
A welder.
An engineer.
A farmer.
Someone carrying 30 or 40 years of knowledge that no computer can completely replace.
Two generations. One workbench. Each knowing something the other needs.
That picture stayed with me. 🩷
Because rural communities spend a lot of time asking:
How do we bring jobs back?
But maybe there's another question worth asking:
What if we prepared our children before the jobs arrived?
What if we gave them the chance to learn skilled trades alongside robotics, digital design, technology and AI?
What if the child who doesn't feel successful sitting behind a desk suddenly discovers they're brilliant when somebody puts a tool in their hands?
What if the girl who's always taking things apart discovers engineering?
What if the farm kid who understands machinery learns automation and creates something that changes agriculture?
What if a student who has no idea where they belong finally finds the room where everything clicks?
That's why I don't think this idea is really about machines.
It's about possibility.
It's about giving our children enough doors to discover what they're capable of.
And men, some of you know things no school can teach from a screen.
You know what a machine sounds like when something isn't right.
You know how metal behaves.
You know what happens when somebody rushes a repair.
Please pass that knowledge on.
And ladies, picture that girl who's always trying to figure out how things work.
Make sure she knows that workbench belongs to her, too.
Let her weld.
Let her machine.
Let her program.
Let her build.
Let her discover just how capable she is.
Because maybe economic development doesn't always begin with a company announcement.
Maybe sometimes it begins with a seventh grader looking at something they just made and realizing:
“I can do this.”
Maybe the company comes.
Maybe it doesn't.
But our children are already here.
Their curiosity is already here.
Their potential is already here.
And we don't need to wait for somebody else to tell us they're worth investing in.
They ARE the investment.
Last week, we talked about planting trees whose shade we may never sit beneath.
Maybe this is another kind of tree.
We plant it with tools.
Knowledge.
Mentorship.
Technology.
Faith.
Opportunity.
And then we let our children grow beneath it. 🌳🩷
So here's my question for parents, grandparents, teachers, tradespeople, business owners—and especially our young people:
If somebody gave you the tools, what would YOU want to learn how to build?
I'd really love to hear the answers in the comments.
Because those answers might tell us something about what we should build next.
There is a future here.
And they can help build it. 🩷
