le together, and create a better, more inclusive society. We also offer art classes, vacation art camps, master classes, and intensives. Scholarships are always available for tuition support. We offer both a Museum Shop and Café, both open to the public during museum hours without admission.

Meet Tom Raffio, President and CEO of Northeast Delta Dental. He first visited the Currier Museum of Art with his Leadership New Hampshire class more than two decades ago.

A self-proclaimed jock who competes in road races most weekends, he immediately appreciated the museum’s warmth and approachability. That first visit to the Currier left an impact. “This place is such a jewel,” he explains. “It’s world-class but also friendly and easy to get to.”

Today, he is a steadfast champion for the arts in New Hampshire. He says corporate support of the arts just makes sense. “It’s good for the economy, for employees, and art for art’s sake.”

Potential new hires, he explains, often explore the local art and culture scene before accepting a position to see what opportunities exist for their families.

“We have Monet and Picasso and Wyeth,” he says with pride about the Currier’s collection. “We’re the only museum in the country with two Frank Lloyd Wright houses just down the street.”

He adds, “You don’t have to go to Boston to see incredible art. Just come into the Currier.”

What would it sound like if you stepped inside this Florentine Baroque painting? The Currier’s videographer imagines hearing something like this if he lost himself in Allegory of Musical Fame by Cesare Dandini.

Learn more: The growing popularity of theater and opera in 17th and 18th century Florence, Italy inspired painters and sculptors to evoke biblical and mythological narratives with visuals from the stage, from gallant gestures to gleaming instruments.

Characters, costumes, and slapsticks: In paintings from 17th- and 18th-century Florence, Italy, the details always tell a story about the subjects and the world beyond the frame.

This was a period of great creative and intellectual energy in Florence. Theater and opera, once reserved for an exclusive few, became popular sources of entertainment. In Harlequin and His Lady (ca 1745) by Giovanni Domenico Ferretti, you can see the rise of the stage. Just look at the characters, costumes, staging, and props.

Harlequin and Columbine are stock characters from the Italian commedia dell’arte (comedy of the profession). This type of popular theater features formulaic plots and exaggerated acting. Here, Harlequin wears his usual mask and tips his hat in a gesture of mock gallantry. A wily servant, Harlequin is cowardly, superstitious, and always penniless. Yet he is also patient and in love with Columbine. Her character is flirtatious, down to earth, and clear-sighted. They wear clothing made of colorful patches recycled from scraps of fancy dress, and both carry slapsticks, or wooden swords that make loud noises when striking comedic blows.
