Hi everyone! I'm happy to announce that I am now a law student, set to graduate in 2026! Why, you may wonder, is me becoming a lawyer relevant to TJF? Here's why:
a. I determined years ago that getting a reliable venue was going to mean me (not TJF, me) buying it, due to the pattern of low donations and seemingly no grant opportunities. Being a lawyer will let me get the funds to do that.
b. My initial specialty will be intellectual property law, which will let me render legal assistance to roster members in regards to copyrights, music contracts, and such. Given that TJF is an original music organization, I always wanted to provide this before, but couldn't, and there were quite a few situations where it would have helped.
c. I'm not going to be working in a law firm. I'm going to be doing freelance remote associate work. This will let me divide my time between law work, running TJF, and doing what else matters to me (like my webcomic). Exactly how much contract work I do is going to mostly be dependent on how fast I want to get the funds to buy the new site (i.e. ASAP); once I've done that, I can rebalance my time usage.
In terms of timeframe, it's just under four years to graduate and get admitted to the bar of NH, then an indeterminate number of years to get established and raise sufficient funds for the site. How exactly I'm going to design that site is TBD but I expect I will be using it for other things as well to offset what I presume will be the low donations I'll get for running concerts. In any case, it should work out.
I realize that some might question the long timeframe for all of this, but after nine years since the start of our hiatus, I personally think that "eventually" is better than "never", and I've never been one to give up. I fully expect, and have always expected, that TJF will come off hiatus in a better situation than it was beforehand, and I hope you'll agree that this is a good way to get there!
