The Jam Factory

The Jam Factory Tax-exempt 501(c)3 Nonprofit local and original music organization Welcome to the page of The Jam Factory!

We are a nonprofit original music and arts organization dedicated to supporting the growth of local musicians and artists and also providing quality concerts and artistic events to the community! At the present time, The Jam Factory is on operational hiatus while we seek out a reliable venue.

Hi everyone! I'm happy to announce that I am now a law student, set to graduate in 2026! Why, you may wonder, is me becoming a lawyer relevant to TJF? Here's why:

a. I determined years ago that getting a reliable venue was going to mean me (not TJF, me) buying it, due to the pattern of low donations and seemingly no grant opportunities. Being a lawyer will let me get the funds to do that.

b. My initial specialty will be intellectual property law, which will let me render legal assistance to roster members in regards to copyrights, music contracts, and such. Given that TJF is an original music organization, I always wanted to provide this before, but couldn't, and there were quite a few situations where it would have helped.

c. I'm not going to be working in a law firm. I'm going to be doing freelance remote associate work. This will let me divide my time between law work, running TJF, and doing what else matters to me (like my webcomic). Exactly how much contract work I do is going to mostly be dependent on how fast I want to get the funds to buy the new site (i.e. ASAP); once I've done that, I can rebalance my time usage.

In terms of timeframe, it's just under four years to graduate and get admitted to the bar of NH, then an indeterminate number of years to get established and raise sufficient funds for the site. How exactly I'm going to design that site is TBD but I expect I will be using it for other things as well to offset what I presume will be the low donations I'll get for running concerts. In any case, it should work out.

I realize that some might question the long timeframe for all of this, but after nine years since the start of our hiatus, I personally think that "eventually" is better than "never", and I've never been one to give up. I fully expect, and have always expected, that TJF will come off hiatus in a better situation than it was beforehand, and I hope you'll agree that this is a good way to get there!

Quick note to whoever suggested the recent change to our status to not mark it as a nonprofit: TJF is in fact a registered 501(c) nonprofit and will continue to be so. The fact that we haven't had any events lately does not impact this fact, and we will resume events when I am able to do so.

Hey everyone, it's time for a REAL status update! You know that super-secret project I've been working on? It's now launched. I want to explain to you how this factors into my own life and also TJF's future, so please keep reading:

1. The project is a webcomic that is intended to support my dual interests of music/arts (mostly art, at this time) and also emerging technologies. Think of it as a form of social activism, due to the way it's designed.

2. It's also intended, eventually, to produce enough revenue for me to finally buy my own site for which to host TJF events on. Some of you may be aware that both Raxx and Thrifty's are now closed; you may also be aware that I was not very happy with their management at the point I left. I'll leave it at that.

3. It's *also* intended to give me what I feel are the qualifications to properly be the Art Manager of TJF. This is not a position I was able to fill previously, but now I can fill it myself. By "qualifications" I mean I am a professional artist, not in terms of what kind of art I do as there are many anyone could do.

So, what does this mean?

a. TJF will remain a music and arts organization that holds festivals and other similar events; I simply haven't been scheduling any for the past few years because I've been too busy. So the TJF you know is still what TJF is.

b. When I am ready to start holding events again, I'll post about it. It may be this summer or autumn, or it may be next summer. I'm still getting up to speed on a lot of things.

c. Clearly, I am not going to be able to buy a venue spot for some time. As the mobile stage thing didn't work out (because I am not willing to tow it) I am instead going to turn to small crowdfunding drives to get the rental for an event hall as need be. This should only be a few hundred dollars and I see no reason why our community wouldn't support that given what else I put into the situation.

If anyone has any questions, let me know. Also, my webcomic is here: https://www.facebook.com/utopianext !

Still moving along with a project related to TJF and quite a bit more. Call it infrastructure work if you will, but things will pick up once it's complete.

10/24/2016

Hope everyone's doing well :) I'm still working at things, usually 8 to 12 hours a day prepping for what it will take to finally get TJF to where it needs to be.

04/03/2016

Still working on my own projects, still going to hold more events in the future. Key point, as I am sure at least some people were wondering: I'm in the process of self-learning a very in depth skill that will be relevant to both TJF and my own pursuits. When I do something I want to do it right, and everything is unfolding well.

10/09/2015

To clear up any confusion, no, TJF is not closed. We will be holding more events in the future under our current festival format.

If you're wondering why we aren't holding any right *now* it's partly because I wasn't able to handle the stage finishing by myself (I'm not a carpenter) and more because I am presently working on another project that I hope to announce at some point in the near future. It will have a meaningful impact on TJF and my other nonprofit work, so stay tuned.

05/18/2015

UPDATE: Due to lack of interest (except by Joel Kahn and Steve Anderson) the open mike is now no longer being scheduled. I'm going to focus on the festival-level events and I'll be certain to include art with the music - that's definitely been working.

Next one TBA this summer once I get the stage finished!

05/12/2015

Well, I now know what materials I need to fix up the stage. I just need to get it and load it into my car... doable :)
