ABOUT THE ARTIST:
“For me, working with clay is a perfect medium. It allows me to create functional items while developing many artistic skills.  With it, I can sculpt and paint while focusing on form, color and function.  I fire my work in many different kiln environments (electric, wood, gas, pit) making the final products sometimes delicate and elegant or sometimes rustic and earthy!  Each piece is unique.”

ABOUT THE STUDIO:

Canton Clay Works is a rustic wood firing studio and ceramics school nestled in the cozy Northwest Hills of CT, in the historic Canton Creamery building from the late 1800s. Established in 2000 by Tim Scull, owner and renowned potter, CCW began as a pottery school and has evolved into a first-rate ceramics facility offering classes, workshops, and firing services in multiple firing methods.

👋 Guest Potters you’ll find at Canton Clay Works during the Crawl:

🎉 Special events / offerings at this studio:

🔥 Saturday 5/2 | 12–2 PM: Noborigama Unloading
Join local potters as we unload work from the Noborigama wood and salt/soda kiln. These firings create one-of-a-kind pieces shaped by ash, flame, and v***r. Wood kiln unloadings are truly Christmas morning for potters — it’s the first glimpse of results, and you never quite know what magic will emerge. Expect spectacular color, dramatic surfaces, and work by several artists, including some of our Clay Crawl participants.

🔥 Sunday 5/3 | 12–2 PM: Gas Reduction Kiln Unloading
See the results of another unique firing method featuring rich, colorful glazes rarely seen in a school setting. You’ll find examples of work made by CCW pottery students alongside pieces from a few local potters.

Information and photos about both kilns can be found at cantonclayworks.com

✨ Meet Avis Cherichetti of Honey Hill Pottery, a participating potter in the 2026 CT Clay Crawl! ✨

🗓 May 2–3, 2026

🕙 10 AM – 4 PM

📍 Find Avis at her studio Honey Hill Pottery in Granby CT where she will be hosting fellow potter, Judy Buffolino.

Avis has been an active potter for almost 60 years, exploring various ceramic techniques. Studying pottery at Stetson University in 1962, she realized that was the way she wanted to spend her life. She participates in numerous workshops and classes annually, continuing her adventure in clay. She has made hand built pots and pots on the potter's wheel. She's fired pots in electric, gas and oil fueled kilns as well as pits, saggars and trash cans. Says Avis, "As I continue to design and refine the objects that I make, I find a rhythm and joy in life."

If one word could describe her work it would be the word "Diverse" — That includes work as well as studio spaces. Some pots are meant to be used and some pots are nonfunctional. Avis makes pots for birds and flowers and pots for people and pets. Some pots are for decorating homes. Any of these pots might be high temperature fired stoneware or lower temperature fired Raku or Saggar pieces.

Diversity in the creative environment is very much part of the process. Avis has a studio at home at Honey Hill Farm in Granby, CT. She also participates in a pottery cooperative called Expressions Pottery Workshop in E. Granby, CT., where she taught adult classes for 23 years. Avis participates annually in Granby Artists Open Studios, Granby, CT. She is now a member of Connecticut Clay Guild and will participate in the first annual Clay Crawl the first weekend in May. She was awarded a 2002 Individual Artist Fellowship from the Greater Hartford Arts Council, Hartford, CT. Her work is represented in the permanent collection

Humor and joy are important factors in my work. It is easy to forget or dismiss the importance of happiness in our lives. Personifying animals in my work not only adds an element of humor, but it makes them relatable and sparks conversation. For example, my sculptural work explores feelings of anxiety and despair but because of the exaggerated expressions, I hope the audience can laugh at their expense.

For my functional work, I want the experience to be explorative and full of wonder. To lead the user, every surface is considered when developing a concept. The punch line to a joke or a morning meditation may be inscribed on the bottom of a mug, or an especially precious detail may be carved into the handle. Each piece often includes layers of sculpted and painted details using techniques such as sgraffito and mishima. Fantasy and whimsy provide a wealth of inspiration for my pottery.

Ashley Paskov is a ceramic artist based in Wethersfield, Connecticut. Through carved textures, waxy matte surfaces, and muted natural palettes, she explores how small organisms repair, protect, and adapt, translating these quiet transformations into clay.

Ashley discovered ceramics at Central Connecticut State University, where she earned her BA in Ceramics in 2015. She completed her MFA at Edinboro University in 2022 and has since exhibited her work nationally, with experience across New England, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina. She has been actively involved in clay communities along the East Coast, including a past role as Ceramics Director at Pocosin Arts School of Fine Craft.

🗓 May 2–3, 2026
🕙 10 AM – 4 PM
📍 Find Claire at Trevor Youngberg’s Studio of The New England Wood Firing Conference in Woodbridge CT

ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Claire Engelhardt (she/her) is a Philly based ceramic artist and educator.

“Woodfiring has been the linchpin of my artistic practice. It challenges me to engage with the balance of control and letting go. Knowing the presence of my hand in each sculpture while embracing the surprises that come from collaborating with an undulating atmosphere.  Each critter emerges from the kiln their personality crystalized on their surface, marked by their journey.

To me woodfiring has become synonymous with being in community. To bring together our knowledge and our questions. We succeed through our ability to labor, learn, and rely on each other.”
