The late artists Rose Williams, Annie Pangowish and Marina Recollet were among an accomplished group of Anishinaabe artists from Manitoulin Island who pushed the boundaries of the art form. They were all true Masters of the art form of making birchbark baskets decorated with porcupine quills, and we feel so blessed to have their incredible work in our online store!

Summer days are soaring by and we hope you are enjoying them as much as we are! After a little more travel, we are finally home soaking up these last few weeks of beautiful Vermont summer before we transition into fall. We have tons of new art on the website, and we are so excited to share it with you!

Check out this Eagle carving by Inuit artist Josie Ohaituk of Sanikiluaq in Nunavut, Canada. It is carved from argillite and Josie Ohaituk etched face and feather details into the flying eagle for a very lifelike effect.

We are just back from the first phase of our summer travels, which took us all around the Eastern and Northern parts of Georgian Bay in Ontario, Canada. We were researching the state of the art form of making Porcupine Quill Boxes among the Anishinaabe people of the Great Lakes. This research was in support of a magnificent collection of Quill Boxes now available on our website.

This collection of Porcupine Quill Boxes is truly historic and includes over 100 pieces. Primarily collected in the 1970’s and 1980’s, it includes works by many of the most famous makers from Manitoulin Island, the shores of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay, and the Harbor Springs area in Michigan. We have had the honor of working with this collection for many years, and the scope and depth of the artistry is breathtaking.

Each box represents countless hours of painstaking labor and generations of artistic knowledge passed from one maker to the next. Sadly, few artists are creating works of this caliber today, making these historic pieces not only beautiful examples of Anishinaabe artistry, but also irreplaceable cultural treasures. All of the boxes in this collection are “in hand” and available for purchase, and we are eager to help you learn more about the art form.

We are so excited to share this stunning collection of Anishinaabe Porcupine Quill boxes with you. Find them live on our website, www.longagoandfaraway.com!
