Hey Hop Jammers, wanted to let everyone know that we made the decision to cancel the jam tomorrow evening due to illness and the potential for winter weather. Folks are always welcome to come by the brewery to enjoy a beer and do a little campfire style acoustic jam if they like, but there will be no PA.

Thanks for understanding and we’ll see y’all on Thursday 01/20.

Hey everyone! We want to take a moment to say thank you for everything you do to help make Hop Jam truly special. Without the love and support of our friends and family we wouldn’t be here today, so thank you!

As some folks are already aware of, recent circumstances have warranted a change in personnel for us with the Hop Jam House Band. We want to wish our friend and brother all the best, but the undue negativity was turning something fun and free-flowing into an unnecessary challenge.

The kind of jam we do here is always going to be a bit chaotic. Some nights we have 5 drummers and no guitarists. Other nights we only have the house band rhythm section and 5 guitarists. We do our best to accommodate everyone, but there’s always going to be hurdles and some people never get to play within the 3-hour time slot we have available. This is also precisely the reason why we don’t have an online sign up process or a sign up sheet.

We’ve also had issues where a group of folks show up late and expect to be able to play together as a group; what is often called a “select jam.” We welcome and encourage these select jams, and we’ve hosted several over the years that have included Cowpoke, Scenic Roots, and Gordon Sterling. The problems occur when we have no forewarning, and groups show up at 8:30pm–9:00pm on a busy night expecting to play. Our policy is to give us 24 hours notice for select jams or we do our best to accommodate them off the cuff.

With these items addressed and out of the way, we would like to take the time to clarify a few things regarding what Hop Jam is about:

1. This is an open jam:
When you come ask Jon or Billee to get on the list, you are asked your name and instrument(s). We look at who else is on the list and you are matched with others to play with. If you ask to play with your friend we will do our best to accommodate you, but this is not guaranteed. Open jam means “anything goes.” It’s the heart and spirit of what we do.

2. Solo acoustic acts are welcomed, but this is not a campfire jam session:
If you want to get up and play some songs by yourself on acoustic guitar we will make it happen. You can also request backing musicians to play along with you if so desired. However, if you don’t have any songs to play and just want to “sit in” with other musicians, that’s a challenge for us. If you ask to play we expect you to have songs you can lead or play with others. In an effort to respect our patron’s and the other musician’s time, no noodling or wishy-washy stuff, please.

3. Hop Jam is like licorice:
Not everyone likes licorice. We fully understand that what we do here isn’t for everyone. With that being said, we may not be your cup of tea…we’re probably more like strawberry basil hard kombucha, to be honest. We work hard to give everyone a chance to play, but you might not like the free-flowing chaos that is the Hop Jam. We embrace this chaos, because we’ve seen how beautiful it can be. To that end, we strive to cultivate it.

We understand that what we do isn’t for everyone, and some folks prefer a more structured setting. That’s perfectly okay and we respect that. But badmouthing us online because you didn’t get to play with your friends or got matched with folks who play differently than you is downright childish. This is supposed to be fun, but what may be fun for some people isn’t fun for others. Please keep this in mind when you come out to join us.

4. Some of the jams are cooking:
We try to limit sets to 15 minutes, more so on very busy nights. However, sometimes the jam starts playing you, and those instances run well past the 20-30 minute mark. This is upsetting to some folks who want to play, and we do completely understand. But try to put yourself in the shoes of the people playing, who are really enjoying themselves and are lost in the music. You would not appreciate some dude running up and cutting you off in the middle of an epic jam. We never want to cut anyone off in the middle of a song.

Hopefully we can continue to attract the best musicians and music lovers in the area. It brings us so much joy to look into the crowd and see folks dancing and singing together. It’s why we do what we do in the first place. As always, we wouldn’t be here without your love and support, so thank you for joining us on this ride!

That was awesome! You people really do make what we do special. Thank you all so much. We will see you all in two weeks on June 3rd, so get ready and bring your friends!

We had a great time last night with you folks for our first of many Hop Jams. Despite the passing showers, the turnout was great and the music was on point. Thank you all and we’ll see you in a couple of weeks!

P.s. tell your friends about us and let’s make the next episode even better!

07/19/2019

Well folks, we are finally able to share the news! We have moved our open mic and jam over to Sinistral Brewing Company on every 1st and 3rd Thursday of month. We want to give a big thank you to Blane Perry and Stacey Williams Perry for giving us an opportunity to keep this thing going at their brewery and we look forward to seeing you folks there soon!

Hey folks, we just wanted to let y’all know what’s going on with us. We are still working out the details and schedule, but we will be bringing the jam to Sinistral Brewing Company! We are very excited about this opportunity and we want to thank them for helping us keep this thing going on the same night in Old Town Manassas.

We’ll update everyone soon and thanks for your patience! ❤️

06/19/2019

FYI: The Monkey Jam will no longer be taking place at our old location.

We are currently discussing other locations with some local businesses and we will keep you folks up to date on where we will go from here.

Thanks for your support and we’ll see you soon.

01/13/2019

Hey there fellow monkeys, just a note to let you know that we have updated the page name. We are now just the Monkey Jam. Easier to remember and still just as fun! See you next Thursday. 🐵

12/27/2018

The Open Mic is on for tonight. It would be great to see some of the musicians I've supported and showed up for the last 8 years come down tonight!

11/20/2018

FYI: the Monkey Jam will not take place this week so that we may celebrate Thanksgiving with our families. We hope you enjoy your holiday weekend and we’ll see you next week! 🦃 🐵

09/21/2018

To prevent any further confusion, and to expedite transitions between acts, please provide your own amplification for sessions with 2 or more players.

We do our best to accommodate acts with multiple players, but we have limited channels available on our mixing board. We can only provide the following:

Drums
Bass amp and guitar
Acoustic amp and guitar
3 vocal mics

For anything outside of this list you will need to bring your own gear.

Select Jams: if you want to play with your band or friends, our policy is to give us 24 hours notice so that we’re prepared to accommodate you and your group. Send us a message on Facebook Messenger to give us a heads up.

Thanks for your help!

Someone walked away tonight with my Level Access jacket at the Hop Jam. Please return it to Sinistral!
What's going on here this week at Sinistral Brewing Company. Our heated tent is going up in the courtyard today so it'll be ready for you guys tonight! 🍻

Tonight: Bingo Night at Sinistral - starts at 7pm.
Thurs: Hop Jam
Fri: First Friday / Gallery Walk in Manassas. Brisk (Twisted Trio - 90's acoustic bluegrass style!) playing for us at 7pm & Puccio's Pizza here, too.
Sat: Puccio's Pizza & Bailey Hayes playing at 7pm.
It's a triple beer release weekend here! Starting with our Poor Man's Road Honey Lager going on tap beginning this afternoon!

A little bit about this beer...
First up in our local musicians series is Poor Man’s Road Honey Lager, brewed with the talented Joe Downer. We blended Pilsen, Honey and acidulated Malts; combined with local honey and Sterling hops for a thirst quenching lager. Honey notes present on your first sip and give way to soft lager flavor and finishes dry. 5.0% ABV, 10 IBU.

Come out tonight to our Hop Jam and try it!
Last week ended with applause from the Gods!!!
The jams continue in Old Town Manassas where Sinistral Brewing Company host a new bi-weekly open jam. Hop Jam
