I'm not sure how many more years of coaching I have in me. I feel like I can do another 10 which would put me at 70. That will be fun. 😃

One of the most valuable skills a wrestling parent can learn is silence.

That statement sounds strange because most parents genuinely want to help. They care deeply about their children. They want them to improve. They want them to reach their potential. Unfortunately, good intentions don’t always produce good results.

After a difficult loss, many parents immediately begin analyzing the match. They discuss mistakes, missed opportunities, tactical decisions, and technical errors. From their perspective, they’re helping. From the athlete’s perspective, it can feel like criticism at the exact moment they need support.

The truth is that most wrestlers already know what went wrong. They don’t need a detailed breakdown thirty seconds after walking off the mat. They’re already replaying the match in their own minds.

What they often need is emotional stability.

The car ride home has become legendary in wrestling circles for a reason. Countless athletes remember those rides far more vividly than they remember the matches themselves. Parents have a tremendous opportunity during these moments. They can either strengthen the relationship or unintentionally increase pressure.

The best parents understand that coaching and parenting are not always the same thing. Sometimes the most helpful response isn’t analysis. Sometimes it’s simply reminding a child that their value extends far beyond a wrestling result.

Lessons can be taught later. Relationships are built in the moment.
