“All is well” has been a personal mantra of mine, inspired by the words of Julian of Norwich. Finding those words in the interactive mural Bright Kontor Osei created for The Right to Appear felt like a message.

We often say the stone walls bring the best people to the gallery, and Bright is certainly one of them. The gratitude he expresses so freely, his belief in belonging, and his conviction that everyone deserves to be seen and heard are more than themes in his art. They are part of who he is.

Spending time with Bright and experiencing his work has been meaningful. DAC is thankful for the connection and the opportunity to share his art with our community. The Right to Appear is an exhibition not to be missed. On view through November 21 at Downtown Artist Cellar.

What a special evening celebrating The Right to Appear with Bright Kontor Osei!

Bright spoke of belonging and the right to be seen and heard. His powerful portraits of Ghanaian street vendors and the interactive mural in our front gallery sparked thoughtful conversations and genuine curiosity, reminding us of the power of art to bring people together. Bright invited us to question how we value people and the work they do, to recognize resilience, and most importantly, to recognize our shared humanity.

We look forward to seeing how this exhibition continues to unfold in our community over the next six weeks.

The Right to Appear is on view through November 21.

This week's NCPR Artwork of the Week features Brit Shaw of Ticonderoga, NY. We love the connections between art, family, nature, and teaching that inspire her work. Proud to support this weekly celebration of regional artists!

This week's Artwork of the Week comes from Brit Shaw in Ticonderoga, NY.

"The mountains have always been a source of inspiration for me," said Shaw. "But in recent years, my 12-year-old son’s journey to become a 46er has given me a new way of experiencing these mountains.

"As we hike together, I find myself drawn to the small and often overlooked moments along the trail, the cairns guiding us along the way, the waterfalls tucked into the woods, the changing light across the High Peaks, etc. These experiences have found their way into my artwork, allowing me to capture not only the landscapes themselves, but also the memories and sense of connection that come with exploring them together.

"My work is also deeply influenced by my students. As a high school art teacher, I have the privilege of being surrounded by young artists every day. Their creativity, willingness to experiment, and unique ways of seeing the world continue to inspire me.

"Between exploring the Adirondacks with my sons and creating alongside my students, I am fortunate to have constant reminders of why I love making art. My work is a reflection of the places, people, and experiences that inspire me and an attempt to hold onto those moments and share them with others."

Celebrating the Life of Lorna Jewell
Sunday, October 11, 2026 | 2–4 PM
Downtown Artist Cellar | 410 East Main Street, Malone

Lorna lived life on her own terms. Curious, outspoken, fiercely independent, and always learning, she was one of those people who, just when you thought you knew her, would surprise you with another side of herself.

Lorna was a passionate supporter of the arts, an art collector, and a maker herself. She was a knitter who used her creativity to express her beliefs and stand up for what mattered to her. She wasn't afraid to make her voice heard.

Lorna supported Downtown Artist Cellar from the very beginning, along with all the galleries and artists in our community. We are grateful for her friendship, her generosity, and the many ways she showed up for the arts.

On Sunday, October 11, from 2–4 PM, we are honored to host a celebration of Lorna's life and share an art collection as individual and interesting as she was. Over the years, Lorna surrounded herself with the art she loved, building an extensive collection that now fills our gallery. As we gather to celebrate her life, her family hopes these works will find new homes where they will continue to be enjoyed and appreciated.

Artwork will be available for purchase through thoughtful offers, with all proceeds donated to The Thrive Project in her memory, helping others experience and engage with the arts.

Her family invites everyone to come as they are, wear bright colors if they'd like, and bring a memory to share or simply hold close.

We are grateful to have known Lorna, to have been supported by her, and to help the art she loved find new homes where it will continue to be appreciated.
