This is the final cut of my thesis film first made in 2018. Re-visited in the past month.
Back story...
Met a filmmaker at a Christian film festival in Tucson about a month ago. God used him to re-ignite my passion for movies.
That's why I went to see if I could doctor "Shell Shocked!"
A film that caused me great distress producing.
A school that rushed me to shoot without having a script fully worked out thus I had to discover the story, plot, and themes while shooting; hoping and praying I would have enough coverage to create a narrative in post.
(Which I do and I don't)
Conflict in countless ways.
Me being self-centered and unintentionally offending a good friend and almost getting beat up. (I was scared lol) Michael Elaire
Losing sound because of the pour down rain with everything shot in the apartment... (Thanks so much for opening your home up for free and allowing me to decorate it, the set was EPIC)
Students who were supposed to be my friends snitching on me for using a real gun. (Guns don't shoot without bullets in them. A bullet is not going to magically appear in a chamber and/or barrel--scaredy cat)
At a stage of depression in my life when I had gained fifteen pounds and felt ugly on the inside and out.
Today, I could shoot this film effortlessly and be the ideal version of myself on camera in both story and performance on account of my growth as both a human being which transfers onto my artistry.
Nevertheless, this version is good enough to prove that I can both act and direct simultaneously, and hopefully give execs enough confidence to hire me as a first time director for a feature.
It's NOT perfect, but it's really good. Especially if you knew the budget/crew size, and resources I had.
That I was able to create this piece, with all the forces of Hell TORMENTING me!
Re-editing this piece has given me both hope and joy.
I was taking control over something I felt devastated by. Ashamed of.
I still cringe in disgust at certain shots in this (but not the ones you are cringing at 😉
But having a God's eye POV over the entire creation of this piece, births a small but sincere smile. It gives me a little bit of hope. I have a dagger that I can strike with when the moment aligns.
This film was first made in vain glory but then I believe my intentions changed. Perhaps that's why God wouldn't allow me to look my best, so that I couldn't cherish and cuddle with a badge of pride.
Having my vanity denied causes my flesh to detach from it therefore, it won't puff my ego.
Is this film blessed or cursed...? Who knows?! (Oh, that's right... God does!)
